One man died Friday evening after an explosion at Heartland Motorsports Park, 7530 S. Topeka Blvd.
Joshua Darryl Aubert, 41, was killed during the explosion that occurred near a maintenance building, according to a news release from Topeka fire marshal Michael Martin.
Firefighters responded about 6 p.m. to the park, where the NHRA Heartland Nationals are being held through the weekend.
Fire crews and American Medical Response arriving on scene found Aubert suffering from critical injuries.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, Martin said.
Martin said an investigation indicates the explosion was accidental.
Evidence shows Aubert was using a torch to cut open what was believed to be an empty metal drum labeled as methanol when the explosion happened, Martin said.
