Southside Speedway Celebrates its 60th Anniversary
Southside Speedway celebrates sixty years in 2019! “The Toughest Short Track in the South,” opened on April 15, 1959 by J.M. Wilkinson and is currently run by his daughter, Sue W. Clements, and granddaughter, Jennifer Mullis.
Southside Speedway has seen many famous drivers battle for the win over the past sixty years, including Junior Johnson, Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett, Darrell Waltrip, Bobby Allison, Ray Hendrick, Cal Johnson, Ted Hairfield, Geoff Bodine, Roy Hendrick, Denny Hamlin, Bugs Hairfield, Eddie Johnson, Chris Dodson, Chris Hairfield, and Chris Johnson.
The track currently features six divisions of race cars including Late Models, Modifieds, Grand Stocks, UCARs, Legends and Bandoleros, and hosts twelve nights of racing from late March through August. The family-owned track in Chesterfield County prides itself on being a family-friendly venue entertaining generations of fans, and continues their tradition of great local short track racing in Central Virginia.
“Southside Speedway has been a part of my life since I was a young child,” says track owner Sue Clements, “some of my most vivid and special memories are of time shared with family and friends at this historic venue. I am looking forward to celebrating Southside’s 60th anniversary with fans old and new! Thank you to all of our wonderful drivers, crews and fans for your continued support of Southside Speedway! We look forward to seeing you all at the track!”
Sue Clements has been running Southside Speedway for the past 16 years.
Jennifer Mullis recounts, “It has been such a blessing to get to be a part of this historical racing community. I grew up listening to amazing stories told by my grandparents, and now have the opportunity to get to experience the excitement first hand. It is a gift to see generations of families from our community come together to cheer and race and experience this one of a kind track.”
Southside Speedway will open this season for its sixtieth year to faithful fans and racers with many ticket specials as well as fun theme nights. It’s a great way to spend Friday nights with your friends and family!
