TIM BROWN CLAIMS SOUTHERN MODIFIED RACING SERIES WIN AT HICKORY
Holds off Charge From Brandon Ward in “Fall Spectacular”
Robbie Brewer and Alex Fleming Claim 602 Series Wins
(Conover, NC): Tim Brown played the patience card to perfection tonight at Hickory Motor Speedway. In qualifying, Brown took the “Precision Spindles Pole Award” over of Brandon Ward. He snatched the #1 starting spot in the top-six redraw ahead of Ward, Bobby Measmer, Jr., James Civali, SMRS points leader Jeremy Gerstner and John Smith and won the race. Sounds like an all Tim Brown night. Wrong!
On the initial start, Brown led lap one but immediately started a slide back through the field. In fact he dropped so quickly many thought there were problems on the Jerry Hunt Supercenter/Hayes Jewelers ride. While Civali and Gerstner took turns at the point, Brown was cruising around the top lane at HMS. While Measmer, Jr, Ward, Smith and Jason Myers were battling for the fourth spot, there was Brown cruising around the top lane. When Tom Buzze moved from seventh to the lead on lap 51, Brown was still in the top lane saving his tires. By lap 63, Buzze had control of the field but Brown had worked his way to Myers back bumper. The caution flag flew on lap 66 for a spin by Measmer, Jr. with a little help from his friends. That started a rash of restarts and cautions that saw Brown inch closer to the front of the field and take the lead on lap 68 with Buzze and Ward in tow. By lap 85, Brown led Ward and Buzze with Smith and a fading Gerstner hanging on. A spin involving Buzze and Smith saved Brown from a hard charging Ward on lap 96 and set the stage for a four lap shootout. Brown got away cleanly on the final restart and held off Ward for the win. Measmer, Jr. recovered from two spins to finish third with Myers and Gerstner rounding out the top five. Chris Fleming finished sixth in his Smith Trucking mount with Civali claiming the seventh spot ahead of Buzze, Smith, Daniel Yates, Trey Hutchens and Mike Norman.
With his 3rd 2018 win, Brown trimmed Gerstner’s lead in season long standings leaving him only eight points behind the 2017 SMRS Champion with two events remaining on the 2018 schedule. The SMRS Modifieds are back in action on October 6th at Tri-County Speedway in Hudson, NC.
In “Lowder Construction 602 Modified Series” action, Robbie Brewer claimed another win. Brewer’s dominance in the series was almost spoiled by James Civali who did double duty in the Ron McKee owned #9. Civali blew past Brewer and looked to be on the way to a win but a caution for a hard crash by Jody Fritts closed the field. Fritts was none the worse for wear but his Modified was done for the night. Civali stumbled on the restart allowing Brewer to pull away. Civali chased Brewer down and was beginning to challenge when the radiator cap came off ending his night and closing the field for a seven lap dash. Brewer disposed of Dean Lowder on the restart and led the rest of the way. Lowder held off Cody Norman for second with Donnie Martin, Richard Trotter, Civali and Fritts rounding out the field. The “Lowder Construction 602 Modifieds” are in action again at Tri-County Speedway in Hudson, NC on October 6th.
The “602 Super Limiteds” 60 lapper saw Alex Fleming return to victory lane. “Rock” Harris led qualifying for the division but the top-six redraw put Matt Henly on the pole for the start. Fleming moved to the point on the start bringing Cale Gale along for the ride. Gale kept the pressure on Fleming and moved to the lead on lap 8 with Harris in tow. Harris worked Gale hard before moving to the point on lap 20, a spot he would hold for the next 24 laps. Caution flew on lap 36 when the cars of Henly, Jacob Creed and Grayson Ward tangled on the front stretch. Harris maintained the lead on the restart over Fleming who slipped past Gale. Fleming dogged Harris until making the pass for the lead on lap 44. Caution flew again on lap 57 for a crash by Ward when his engine let go entering turn three. Fleming survived two restarts and a bit of confusion when the flagman inadvertently bumped the caution lights on the final restart. Fleming mastered the miscue and Harris to take the win. Gale finished third with Henly and Jacob Creed rounding out the top five. Kirk Sheets finished sixth with Wesley Thompson, David Creed, Ward and Keith Graham rounding out the top ten. The “602 Super Limited Tour” will race next at Tri-County Speedway in Hudson, NC on Saturday, October 6th.
Vince Midas bested Brody Pope in a special 75 lap event for the Southeast Limited Late Model division. Mack Little finished third with LeLand Honeyman in fourth and Tyler Gregory in fifth.
Shane Canipe bested A.J. Sanders in the Mini Stock Feature with Chuck Wall in third. Johnny Baker finished fourth and Tim Evans was fifth.
Kyle Campbell led Brett Scuggs to the finish line in the “Allison Legacy Series” feature with Justin Taylor, Jack Galunke and Ethan Elder rounding out the top five.
