Score Wins in “Keller Williams Realty Family Night” at Caraway Speedway
(Sophia, NC): Brandon Ward from Winston-Salem, drove his #19, “Tour Type” Modified to victory at Caraway Speedway Saturday night for his third win in five starts in the Southern Modified Racing Series (SMRS). Ward was the quickest qualifier for the 75 lap feature with a lap at 16.803 seconds edging current SMRS points leader, Jeremy Gerstner, from Wesley’s Chapel, FL for the top spot. But the win did not come easy for Ward. The top six qualifiers re-draw for starting spots under SMRS rules and that put Ward in the fifth starting spot behind Tim Brown, Mike Norman, Gerstner and Trey Hutchens for the start. Brown quickly moved to the point dragging Gerstner and Ward with him. Hutchens, Norman and Doug Jackson in Phil Stefanelli”s #17 followed. Brown stayed at the point with Gerstner under his rear bumper until a mid-race caution closed the field. Brown chose to make a pit stop at that point for adjustments handing the lead over to Gerstner. Gerstner led until another caution on lap 60 closed the field again. On the restart, Gerstner spun his tires allowing Ward to escape with the lead and eventually the win. Gerstner finished second. Brown managed to get back to third spot in the finishing order after another stop during the lap 60 slow-down. Hutchens kept the leaders close and nailed down fourth spot at the finish followed by Norman and Jackson. Gerstner maintained his slim lead over Brown in season standings followed by Hutchens, Norman and Ward.
In other racing, Richard Trotter was the beneficiary of some late race action between Zach Brewer and Robbie Brewer and their bad luck turned into Trotters good fortune. Robbie Brewer claimed the pole for the Lowder Construction 602 Modified Tour with a lap at 17.969 seconds followed by Zach Brewer, Cody Norman, Dean Lowder and Trotter. Robbie Brewer drew the point and jumped to the lead with the “other” Brewer in tow and Trotter moving through the pack to run third. Norman and Lowder swapped fourth and fifth a couple of times while keeping the leaders in sight. A late race caution closed the field and after the restart, Zack Brewer managed to get Robbie Brewer loose entering turn one. Robbie Brewer returned the favor in turn three sending Zack Brewer around. Zack Brewer went to the rear for his spin and Robbie Brewer joined him after a rough driving penalty for his move. That Put Lowder on the point with Trotter on his outside. On the restart, sparks flew everywhere as the front row battled as well as the “Brewer Boys” banging around behind them. Lowder hung on for the win with Zack Brewer getting back to second ahead of Robbie Brewer, Lowder and Norman.
It was a good night for the Robertson family Saturday at Caraway Speedway as they finished first and second in the Lowder Construction 602 Super Limited Tour event. In qualifying, younger brother Chase, bested Jacob Creed for the top spot followed by Austin Harris, Matt Henley, Ryan Robertson, Rock Harris, Kirk Sheets and Chad Brooks. The re-draw put Henley on the inside front row spot flanked by Austin Harris and on the break Henley jumped to the point with Harris right behind. Ryan Robertson nudged inside Harris in turn three and in a replay of the last 602 Super Limited event, sparks flew with Harris suffering a cut left rear tire and a trip to pit road for new rubber. Henley continued at the point but those Robertson boys were on the move with Ryan in second spot and Chase moving from his fifth starting spot to run third. A Henley bobble sent the #98 sliding up the track in turn one allowing the Robertsons to move to the top two spots with Ryan holding off a hard charging, but “respectful” Chase for the win. While the Robertson family celebrated in victory lane, the Harris gang suffered through a rough night at the track. “Pop” Rock Harris recovered from some early race problems to finish third but son Austin, drove a mangled #x59 home deep in the field.
Michael Adams was the big winner in the BG Sportsman feature. Adams claimed the pole in qualifying and the win. Adams bested a hard charging Tommy Neal and Amber Lynn to claim the win in the 35 lap special for that division. Zack Orr, Mack Little, Dylan Ward and Frank Fritts rounded out the pack.
Allen Vance and Mack Little put on a fender banging clinic in the 30 lapper for the Caraway Limited Late Models before Vance edged Little by a car length to claim the win. Amber Lynn finished third with John Bradley fourth.
Johnny Baker bested a strong Mini Stock field to take the 20 lap feature. Mark Baker finished second ahead of Allen Hornady, Michael Lowery, Brandon Crotts, Jeffrey Burrow, Kyler Staley and Barry Wilson.
Zach Bralley took the win in the UCAR Division over Gary Dillard, Jimmy Cooper, Steven Collins, Guy Bralley, Allen Gauldin and Doug Harris.
