Clint Bowyer ended a 190-race winless streak by dominating the circuit’s shortest track, leading 215 laps on the way to his first win since 2012.
Bowyer, 38, held off Kyle Busch over the final 114 laps to score the ninth Cup win of his career.
He landed at Stewart-Haas Racing last season and had some good runs but extended the winless streak through a tough year. “That’s where the frustration started to set in,” Bowyer said. “That’s when you start panicking. Everybody knows last year was a lot of panic on my behalf. We’re expected to perform, and we’ve got this opportunity and we couldn’t put it together.”
Chances are high that Bowyer was at the center of a big, extended party Monday night. “I was thinking about going to bed,” he deadpanned. “That’s a lie. I’m going to the hospital. That would be a safer measure for me right now -- jump in whatever ambulance is here and beg them to take me to a hospital.”
"Let me tell you something, Gene Haas, Tony Stewart, to give this old dog a fresh chance and fresh blood with a new opportunity. Finally to get the 14 in victory lane is just a weight off the shoulders. It’s been a long time."
