From the old modified coup to the Camaro, and other cars he drove like the #1 modified and LM sponsored by NuStyle (I forget the owners name), drivers like Ray Hendrick will live in our memories and hearts as long as we live. I grew up at the dirt tracks like Trico (now Orange County). I remember when Trico was paved and Ray Hendrick would come down and clean house every Friday night and other nights too. I didn't like Ray Hendrick at all at first, because he beat the socks off our locals who were just trying to learn how to race on pavement. After I got over it and saw how great a driver Ray was, I began to respect him and like him. He was so good, he could get out in front where he wanted to be and ease up and save his equipment in case somebody did get close enough to challenge him, then he would turn it up a knotch or two. After a while Sam Ard started coming up to Trico, and he and Ray and Monk Tate waged some battles on that old track. Still with higher level competition showing up, Ray still won a bunch of times. It pleases me to go to the Hendrick Motorsports museum when I'm up that way and see the old #11 coup and enjoy the memories it rekindles.
