Despite Three Runner-Up Finishes, Mike Jones’ South Boston Speedway Season Has Been A Struggle At Times

Mike Smith

SOUTH BOSTON, Va. (June 13, 2017) – Mike Jones has developed a good understanding of the phrase “feast or famine” this year at South Boston Speedway.

The young Limited Sportsman Division driver has three second-place finishes in five starts this season. The other two starts? Destroyed race cars, which has left him barely inside the top 10 in the points standings.

The two wrecks, the first in the early laps of the season-opener, and the second in the third race of the season have been frustrating and expensive.

“I don’t know if we even knocked off a fender last year and then to start the year off immediately having to spend a lot of money and fix a race car,” said Jones. “After that first race we had to rebuild everything from the steering wheel forward. That has happened twice.

“Then in the third race somebody spun in front of us and we had nowhere to go. That’s racing. I’ve really been fortunate the last five years of racing to not tear up a lot of stuff, be hard on the equipment. We’ve got a monkey on our back this year, that’s for sure.”

While the two wrecked race cars have hurt Jones in the points standings, they haven’t hurt his on-track performance. In each case, his team has been able to rebuild his car to same level of performance as before the wreck.

“It’s not as hard as it used to be,” Jones said of the ability to rebuild a car without losing speed. “We’ve got a base line and we can come back and start at that point. But it’s still difficult.”

Jones is coming off a pair of second-place finishes in twin Limited races two weeks ago at South Boston and expects another solid run in this Saturday night’s Halifax Insurance presents Whelen NASCAR Late Model Twin 75s.

“We’ve got the speed. If we can keep the fenders on it and work on it, we’ll be fine,” said Jones, whose car is sponsored by Saturday’s race sponsor, Halifax Insurance. “Every race we’ve finished this year, we’ve finished second. Every race we’ve been beside the leader at some point in the race, and in the pass for the lead something has happened, a caution or I wasn’t quite fast enough to pull off the move.”

Saturday’s action includes twin 75-lap races for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car Division, a 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race, a 30-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and a 15-lap race for the Budweiser Hornets Division.

In honor of Father’s Day, all dads will be admitted for $5. Other adult admission is $10 and $5 for youth ages 7-12. Kids ages six and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
