Hickory Motor Speedway

October 10, 2009 Clouds loomed as fans made their way into America’s Most Famous Short Track, Hickory Motor Speedway, for the first portion of the 2009 Fall Brawl presented by Pepsi. The rain stayed away as qualifying began for all divisions featuring the Bojangles Late Models, the Advance Auto Parts Limited Late Models, the Bad Boy Mowers Super Trucks, the Hickory 4 Cylinders, the Renegades and the Tarheel Vintage Cars. As qualifying completed drivers from the Renegades division lined up for their feature event, followed by the Tarheel Vintage Cars and the Hickory 4 Cylinders.

The Renegades got the action started for the 2009 Fall Brawl as they took to the track for a 25-lap caution free event. The #5 of Dillon Crouch stepped out into the lead from his second place starting spot and began to walk away from the field. On lap three the #85 Dustin Walker put the pressure on the #17 of Barney Arnette as he was looking for his opportunity to take over the third place position, capturing the spot on lap four. On lap 13 Walker continued his journey to the front as he pulled under the #41 of Roy Smith aiming for second. It didn’t take long for Walker to power ahead and take over the position as he sailed past Smith on lap 14. The # 16 of Carroll McKinney kept the action going as (he) pulled under Arnette moving into fourth. Walker gave it all he had during the final five laps as he gained ground on Crouch with every lap, but it was Crouch who would come to the checkers first leaving Walker to settle for second. Smith, McKinney and Arnette rounded out the top five.

The action was intense during the 25 laps of the Tarheel Vintage Cars feature. The field powered to the green with the #12 of Johnny Gregory sailing ahead of the pole sitter the #16 of Bill Webb. As the two cleared turn three they connected tearing off the left front fender of Gregory. The collision put Gregory out of the race and brought out the first caution of the evening. The #77 of Ken Webb led the field at the restart with the #8 of Sam Beam and the #90 of Dennis Hinkle in tow. As the field headed into turn one B. Webb spun around bringing out the second and final caution. Beam used the restart to his advantage as he shot under K. Webb grabbing the lead as he began to pull away from the field.

By lap four B. Webb had worked his way back up into the second place spot and set his sights on Beam. B. Webb had reeled Beam in by lap seven, riding his bumper B. Webb looked high and low for his chance to move back into the top spot. It didn’t take long as B. Webb regained the lead on lap 22 and lead the field to the finish. Beam, K. Webb, the #66 of Richard Perdemore and Hinkle made up the top five.

The Hickory 4 Cylinders capped off day one of the 2009 Fall Brawl presented by Pepsi with a special 50-lap feature. The racing was clean and fast as the #09 of Shane Canipe pulled under the #21 of Todd Harrington on lap two taking over the second place position. During the first ten laps the #4 of pole sitter Adam Beaver created a commanding lead over the field, pacing the field to the checkered flag. On lap 13 the #07 of Matt Laws shot past Harrington on the back stretch taking over third leaving Harrington to settle for fourth. The #17 of Curtis Pardue completed the top five.
