USARacing Pro Cup Series at Langley Speedway

Hampton Virginia/Honor Flight 250 Race Report Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009

Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem, N.C., moved out front on lap 206 and sped to his second consecutive victory in Sunday afternoon's Hampton Virginia/Honor Flight 250 for the USARacing Pro Cup Series.
With qualifying washed out on Saturday, the starting lineup was set by the current car owner standings, putting Clay Rogers on the pole. Bobby Gill lined up alongside Rogers, while Ward, Drew Herring and rookie Lucas Ransone filled positions 3-5.
As the event got under way, Rogers jumped into the lead. After an early yellow flag, at lap 7, he set sail, extending his advantage to nearly half a straightaway, while second-place Gill tussled with Ransone and Herring. Gill gave way on lap 20 when he slid up the track in Turns 1 and 2.
Herring slipped past Ransone for second on lap 26. With his pursuers swapping positions behind him, meanwhile, Rogers pulled away by over half a straightaway.

The second caution flag appeared on lap 58, bringing most of the leaders to the pit lane. Justin Boston, who started 18th, remained on the track and picked up the lead.
Caution #3 flew just after the ensuing restart.
Back under green, at lap 69, Boston was able to hold Rogers at bay, fashioning a two-length advantage.
The fourth caution flag waved on lap 79 when a logjam in Turns 3 and 4 ended with Jeff Agnew's machine resting on top of Herring's. The red flag was brought out as track workers separated the two cars. The delay lasted a little over 20 minutes.
During the caution period, Boston headed to the pits, handing the lead back to Rogers on lap 82. J.P. Morgan, local standout Woody Howard, Ward and John Gibson made up the top five.
Rogers showed the way until lap 151 when he pitted under the race's seventh yellow flag. Howard, who swiped second from Morgan on lap 145, also headed to the attention of his crew.
Returning to green, Matt Lofton, who started 16th, was the new leader. Ransone was second, but gave way to Ward on lap 159.
Cautions #8, #9 and #10 flew on laps 166, 174 and 184 as Lofton held onto the top spot. The caution on lap 184 was a setback to Gill and Rogers, who locked horns in Turn 2 while battling for third place.
While Lofton continued to lead, signs of trouble began to appear as the event neared the 200-lap mark. Entering the turns, white smoke began to belch from the exhaust of Lofton's #07n car.
Ward moved past Lofton for the lead on lap 206, getting the better of him as they raced down the backstretch. Within a handful of laps, Ward had pulled away by half a straightaway. Officials black-flagged Lofton to the pits on lap 209, but he remained on the track, finally losing his engine at the start/finish line as he began lap 212.
Lining up for what would turn out to be the final restart, Ward was out front, followed by Gill, Howard, Morgan and Boston.
Back under green, Ward eked out a slim edge, while Howard began to hound Gill for the runner-up spot. On lap 223, Howard slipped under Gill on the backstretch and nosed ahead at the line. Gill tried to cross back over to Howard's inside on lap 224 and the two went door-to-door until lap 226 when Howard gained the upper hand.
The Howard/Gill duel was just what Ward wanted to see in his mirror, as he steadily increased his lead.
At the finish, Ward was the winner by nearly a full straightaway over Howard. Gill was third to the line, while Morgan and Rogers completed the top five. Boston was sixth, followed by Gibson, Caleb Holman, Derek Kale and Ransone. The top 10 drivers all finished the entire distance.

Ryan Nester started on the pole and led all the way to maintain his unbeaten streak in the 40-lap Atlantic Power Sweeping Super Street feature. The victory was his ninth of the season.
Steve Dill was third on the starting grid and moved up to second on the opening lap. He held down the runner-up spot throughout the event, fighting off Jeff Shannon.
After leading by as much as five lengths, Nester backed off a bit near the finish to work past a slower car, allowing Dill to close the gap.
At the checkers, Nester was the winner by a little more than two lengths over Dill. Shannon was third, while Larry Venable and Sean Calway completed the top five.

Starting near the tail of a 25-car field, Adam Florian worked his way into the lead in the closing laps and scored his fifth victory in the 40-lap EZ Auto of Newport News UCAR race.
Florian had been due to start on the pole, but mechanical problems during Saturday's practice rounds forced him to take his car home for repairs and meant that he'd have to start at the back of the pack.
Florian's bad break moved points leader Randy Prillaman to the pole and he responded by leading the first 30 laps. Meanwhile, Florian was making short work of the rest of the field. He took over second place on lap 16.
After riding Prillaman's bumper for about 10 laps, Florian grabbed the lead on lap 31 as the leaders dealt with slower traffic in Turn 4. Prillaman returned the favor on lap 32, but Florian wasn't through, nosing ahead at the end of lap 33. Florian cleared Prillaman on lap 34 and edged ahead by a single car-length.
On the final lap, Prillaman tried to muscle Florian aside as they headed into Turn 3 for the last time. Florian held firm, though, rocketing off the fourth corner and winning by two lengths.
Chris Hildebrand overcame an early-race pit stop and come home in third. Renno Marchetti IV and Michael Waters tailed the lead trio to the stripe, in fourth and fifth, respectively.
