Twelfth starting Walker Arthur takes exciting Victory Lap Late Model win
Aug 16, 2009 - updated Aug 16th, 2009 1:31pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA --

Walker Arthur of Forest, VA finished the 2008 season as the Victory Lap Late Model Champion he returned for the first time in 2009 and showed everyone why he took home the Championship crown last year with a dominating win.

Starting twelfth Arthur quickly worked his way into contention for the lead by lap 3 as he battled for third. On lap 11 Arthur got inside Anthony Kincaid for second. The two battled side by side for the next few laps both going for the lead on lap 14 three wide into turn 1 with then leader Joey Bounds. When the dust settled in turn 2 Arthur had powered around the outside to take the lead. Kincaid tried several times to get inside Arthur for the lead only to be turned away as Arthur cruised on to the win in his #87 Cecil B Arthur Enterprises sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rocket.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been back and the competition hasn’t gotten any easier, that was a great race with Kincaid and Bounds. The track was just awesome,” commented Arthur in victory lane.

Rounding out the top five were Anthony Kincaid, Tom Cohick, Tyler Bailey and Scott Adams.

In other action Kyle Pruitt of Ijamsbille, PA cruised to his second win of the season in the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature. In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature point leader Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA took the lead from John Ferguson of Gloucester, VA on lap 10 and then held off a late race charge by Brian Maxey of King George, VA for his second win of the season. In the Truckin Thunder 25 lap feature Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA wrestled the lead from Wayne Carroll of Fredericksburg, VA on lap 7 and then cruised to his second win of 2009. In the Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA would have the hood of his car fly up and block his vision on the final lap in turn 2. With Same Archer quickly gaining on the leader Adkins would finish the race with limited vision and pick up the victory.

In the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature newly wed Joe Bounds of Partlow, VA and David Steele of Newport News, VA led the field to green with Bounds leading the first lap. On the next circuit the race for second got three wide with Steele, Anthony Kincaid and Brad Rigdon. Steele would hold on for the moment but then give it up to Kincaid on lap 2.

On lap 5 the races first caution came out for the spinning Steele as he battled to hold on to third. On the restart Walker Arthur, who started twelfth, worked to the inside of Rigdon to take third. On lap 11 Walker went to after Kincaid for second as Kincaid was working on Bounds for the lead. Over the next three laps Walker and Kindcaid battled side by side for second. On lap 14 Bounds, Arthur and Kinciad split lap traffic three wide into turn 1 with Arthur using the high side to take over the lead.

On lap 16, caution would come out for Bounds as his car slowed in turn 2 ending his night. On the restart Arthur got a great jump on Kincaid to stretch his lead to two car lengths. On lap 20 the battle for third heated up between Tom Cohick, Tyler Bailey and fourteenth starting Scott Adams just as caution came out for William King and Ed Pope.

On the restart Kincaid stayed right with Arthur nearly clipping him in turn 2. The little bobble by Kincaid allowed Arthur to pull away by five car lengths. Caution would once again come out on lap 26 for Fireball Latham closing the field on Arthur’s bumper.

On the restart Kincaid looked inside Arthur heading into turn 1 but was unable to make the pass for the lead. On lap 27 the caution would come out once again for the spinning Steele in turn 4. On the restart Arthur once again pulled away from Kincaid and the rest of the field.

On lap 30 Adams looked inside Bailey in turn 1 for fourth with Stephen Evans in tow. With the battles behind him Arthur pulled away and picked up his first win of 2009. Following Arthur to the checkers were Tom Cohick, Tyler Bailey and Scott Adams. With the victory Arthur picked up a $50 certificate from Keizer Aluminum Wheels.

In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Chet Gagnon and Wesley Givens led the field to green but it was John Ferguson who started on the outside of the second row that would rocket to the front and lead the first circuit.

The races first caution would come out on lap 6 for a spinning Wesley Givens. On the restart Dan Arnold would take second from Gagnon followed by Brian Maxey.

On lap 9 Arnold would dive inside Ferguson for the lead followed again by Maxey. The two worked their way through lapped traffic.

On lap 21 Maxey tried the inside of Arnold in traffic only to be turned away. Again on lap 23 Maxey tried to take way the lead this time three wide in turn 4 as the leaders worked around a slower car. Once in clean air Arnold was able to hold off Maxey and take home his second win of 2009.

In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Mary Anne Williams of Chester, VA and Kyle Pruitt of Ijamsville, PA led the field to green with Pruitt rocketing to the lead from his outside starting position. Once out front Pruitt began to pull away as Williams, Troy Severin and Daren Bolac battled for second.

On lap 2 Bolac put a slide job on Severin in turn 1 for third and set out for Williams. On lap 8 Bolac went to the outside of Williams for the runner up spot, the two touched sending Bolac spinning to the wall ending his night.

On the restart Pruitt pulled away from Williams and the field. On lap 10 the battle was for second with Williams holding off Severin, Ryan Price and Tom Humphries. Over the next 10 lap Severin worked the back of Williams for second as Pruitt pulled away.

Pruitt would cruise to his second victory of the season followed to the checkers by Mary Anne Williams, Troy Severin, Ryan Price and James Hawk. Pruitt picked up a $50 certificate from Keizer Aluminum Wheels and James Hawk and Michael Tolley picked up $25 certificates from Poncho’s Racing Products.

In the Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Sam Archer of Waldorf, MD and Mitchell Hart of Hanover, VA led the field to green with Archer leading the first circuit followed closely by Brett Adkins in second. As the two were pulling away caution came out for Gary Wheaton and a broken axle in turn 2.

On the restart Archer and Adkins began to pull away from the field. On the next lap Adkins felt it was time to take the lead. On lap 3 caution would come out for James Givens as he slowed in turn 3 with mechanical issues.

On the restart Adkins pulled away as Marty Coltrain made a move for fifth as he tried getting to the inside of Brandon Coates to no avail. On lap 10 Archer and Hart battled for second as Adkins began to stretch out his lead. Behind the battle for second Wesley Givens, Coates and Ryan Toole wrestled over the third spot with Givens holding off each advance.

Over the last three laps the only trouble would encounter would be a lost hood pin that had his hood close to flying off. The hood would fly up and block Adkins vision as he exited turn 2. Adkins gingerly worked his way back to the checkers with Archer closely quickly but Adkins had just enough to get the victory. Following Adkins to the checkers were Sam Archer, Mitchell Hart, Wesley Givens and Brandon Coates. Archer, Hart and Coates would be DQ’d in post race inspection moving Ryan Toole, Marty Coltrain and Paul Bess into the top five.

In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature Tommy Upshaw of West Point, VA and Wayne Carroll of Fredericksburg, VA led the field to green with Carroll leading the first lap. Caution would come out on lap 3 for a spinning Kenny Moreland in turn 4.

On the restart Roger Jamerson would take second from Upshaw. On lap 4 Jamerson went after Carroll for the lead with the two battling side by side over the next four laps before Jamerson would power by in turn 2 followed by Todd Traylor.

On lap 18 Tim Shelton tried a slide job on Tony Woods in turn 1, the move came up a little short and the two touched with Shelton emerging with the position. On lap 21, caution would come out for Moreland once again this time with rear end trouble.

On the races final restart Jamerson would lead Traylor, Shelton and Woods back into turn 1 and begin to extend his lead. Shelton and Wood would push and shove for third as Jamerson went on to record his second win of 2009 and extend his point lead. Following Jamerson to the checkers were Todd Traylor, Tim Shelton, Tony Woods and Tommy Upshaw.
