Langley Speedway News
Kids Night scheduled for this Saturday Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009

Hampton, Va. --

(Aug. 12)

Seven feature events are planned for this Saturday, Aug. 15, when Langley Speedway continues its 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule with AMF Bowling Kids Night.

Saturday's lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars (100 laps); B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Old Point National Bank Grand Stocks (40 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Trucks (25 laps); Casey Cycle City INEX Legends (25 laps); EZ Auto of Newport News UCARs (25 laps); and, Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).

Front gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice begins at 2 and wraps up at 4. Time trials get under way at 4:30, following a 4:15 drivers meeting. At 6:15, fans are invited onto the track to meet and greet their favorite drivers. Beginning at 6:30, Bubbles the Clown hosts fun games and activities for the kids. Pre-race ceremonies commence at 6:55, while the Champ Karts lead off the evening's feature slate, shortly after 7.

Tickets are $10 for adults. For this week's Kids Night program, all youngsters, 12 and under, are admitted free. There is also no admission charge for military personnel in uniform. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly "test and tune" session on Thursday, Aug. 13. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6. Pit admission is $10. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.

The Speedway's "Wacky Wednesdays" series continues this evening with the customary lineup of One-on-One Drags (one-lap match races), "Time Attacks" (solo runs against the clock) and a Burnout Competition.

Gates open at 6 p.m. A drivers meeting is scheduled for 7 and the fun gets going at 7:15. Tickets are just $5 and "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes are $15.

Left idle by the rainout of last Saturday's Late Model feature, C.E. Falk slipped from fifth to sixth in this week's NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national Top 500. He is 33 points behind fifth-place Marty Ward (Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina) and one ahead of Matt Buller (I-80 Speedway in Nebraska).

Meanwhile, at the top of the standings, Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., has taken a one-point edge over Connecticut Modified ace Keith Rocco, who had led the points parade for nearly two months. Morris is bidding for his third national title and his second in a row.

One driver to watch as the season winds down may be Nick Joanides, who competes at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, Calif. He has scored 10 wins and 15 top-five finishes in 15 starts. Each driver's 18 best finishes are considered when the final standings are calculated, so Joanides can pile up points in three more races before he starts dropping events. He ranks ninth in the current national rundown.

Other Langley regulars in the Top 500 include: Danny Edwards Jr. (164th); Woody Howard (224th); Greg Edwards (225th); Mark Wertz (245th); Jeff Shiflett (393rd); Wesley Falk (398th); Dean Shiflett (489th); and, Shawn Balluzzo (494th).

In the Virginia state standings, Morris continues to lead the way, 800-638, over Falk. Hampton's Nick Smith, competing this season at South Boston (Va.) Speedway, is third. Danny Edwards Jr. is 18th, though he has fewer starts (11) than any other driver in the state Top 20.

The USARacing Pro Cup Series returns to Langley Speedway next Saturday, Aug. 22, for the Hampton Virginia/Honor Flight 250. A 50-lapper for the Atlantic Power Sweeping Super Streets is slated for a 5 p.m. green flag, followed by the Pro Cup feature at 7. The EZ Auto of Newport News UCARs wrap up the program with a 25-lap event.

Advance tickets are on sale now in the Speedway office. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for kids, 6-12. Tickets for military personnel and senior citizens are $13. Weekday office hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

The $2,000-to-win Dale Lemonds/King Hodges Memorial 40 for the Casey Cycle City INEX Legends tops the bill on Saturday, Aug. 29, when Langley Speedway hosts USG Night.

Also, on the 29th, the Speedway holds its annual "Track-A-Thon" to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp, one of the NASCAR community's favorite charities. Led by the Rev. Tom Potter, Langley's chaplain, sponsored participants will take a two-lap stroll around the track.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.

To learn more about Langley Speedway, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or consult the track's Web site - www.langley-speedway.com.
