Mod tilt headlines 5-race SYSCO Night slate Wednesday, July 29, 2009

Shawn Balluzzo and Chris Johnson will renew their tussle for the Modified championship this Saturday, Aug. 1, as Langley Speedway continues its 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series campaign with SYSCO of Hampton Roads Night.

The five-race feature lineup includes: B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Old Point National Bank Grand Stocks (40 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Trucks (25 laps); Standard Welding Pro 6s (30 laps); and, Larry King Legal Services Enduros (50 laps).

Front gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice rounds commence at 2 and wrap up at 4. Time trials get going at 4:30, following a 4:15 drivers meeting. Pre-race festivities start at 6:55 and the Pro Sixers lead off the racing program, shortly after 7.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

Late Model points leader C.E. Falk has maintained fifth place in the latest NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national Top 500. He is sandwiched between two dirt track standouts - 17 points behind fourth-place Andy Eckrich of Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway in Iowa and 11 ahead of sixth-place Matt Buller of I-80 Speedway in Nebraska.

Connecticut Modified ace Keith Rocco is still the national leader, just 13 points up on two-time champ Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va.

Other Langley drivers in the Top 500 include: Danny Edwards Jr. (109th); Woody Howard (166th); Greg Edwards (167th); Mark Wertz (178th); Jeff Shiflett (337th); Wesley Falk (342nd); Dean Shiflett (429th); Shawn Balluzzo (432nd); rookie Kyle Waltz (480th); and, Terry Carroll (496th).

In the Virginia state rankings, Falk remains second to Morris. Danny Edwards Jr. checks in at 16th, while Howard and Greg Edwards are 19th and 20th, respectively.

In the Modified division, which will take center stage this weekend, Balluzzo holds a 10-point lead over Johnson in the championship standings, 338-328.

Through seven races, Balluzzo has been a model of consistency, posting one win and six runner-up finishes. Johnson, meanwhile, has claimed five checkered flags. He's been playing catch-up, though, since an early exit from the April 25 event left him with a 10th-place result.

The top seven finishers in last Saturday's Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Kart 20-lapper sailed through the post-race technical inspection, which was conducted on Sunday. Eighth-place Spencer Saunders wasn't as fortunate, though, and he was dropped to the tail of the official rundown.

The amended finishing order: 1. David Phelps; 2. Tim Benefield; 3. Ryan Hudgins; 4. Jake Harberts; 5. Adam Chalkley; 6. Phillip Clarke; 7. Mike Dayton; 8. Ron Foxx; 9. Dannie Wyatt; 10. Clif Savage; 11. Chuck Weeks; 12. Bill Dailey; 13. John Savage; 14. David Millard; 15. Spencer Saunders.
