Twin 75-lap NASCAR Whelen Late Model races will highlight racing action Saturday at South Boston

South Boston, VA. --

South Boston Speedway will return to action following a week off with a smorgasbord of racing excitement to offer fans on Saturday, July 18.

America’s Hometown Track will host the NASCAR Whelen Twin 75’s race program on Saturday. The event includes a total of five action-packed races. The engines will roar to life and the first race will get underway at 7 p.m.

A pair of 75-lap races for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Late Model Stock Car Division will highlight the NASCAR Whelen Twin 75s race program. Some drivers love ‘em. Some drivers don’t. Nearly all fans, however, are thrilled with the exciting side-by-side racing produced by the twin 75-lap shootouts.

And, the fact that the season has reached mid-July, both races will be key in the chase for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship at South Boston Speedway.

Deac McCaskill, who finished third in the Late Model Stock Car championship chase last season, began the season sluggishly, but has surged to the top of the point standings and has one win to his credit already this year. McCaskill is currently 19 points ahead of David Quackenbush, who has also had a season of improvement in 2009.

One-time winner Justin Johnson, the early points leader this year and the 2008 runner-up in the title chase, is third in the championship hunt, three points behind Quackenbush and a mere four points ahead of three-time winner Nick Smith.

The NASCAR Whelen Late Model Stock Car races will feature even more excitement this week as Brandon Butler has announced he will be in the field for the twin 75-lap events.

“I’m excited to be back at South Boston Speedway driving the Bailey’s/Cox Racing Engines Chevrolet,” Butler said. “Hopefully, we can get towards the front and put on an exciting show for the fans.”

Also slated for action on July 18 will be the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

Brian Pembelton, a four-time winner this season, has opened a 52-point lead over second-place Jeb Burton in the point standings. Two-time winner Tommy Peregoy sits third in the points race, just 10 points behind Burton.

The tightest championship battle currently is in the Pure Stock Division where three drivers are within two points of each other at the top of the standings.

Chris Crosby has taken over the lead in the standings, but only has a two-point advantage over a second-place tie between Courtney Crosby and two-time winner Mickey Cassidy.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 12 p.m. Practice for all divisions will be held from 2:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get underway at 5:15 p.m.

Admission is $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 when accompanied by a paying adult and children, ages six and under, are admitted free with a paid adult.
