Smith Takes Bailey’S Late Model 200

South Boston, VA. --

Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. cashed in on his third win of the season and his biggest-ever South Boston Speedway prize here Friday night in the Bailey’s Late Model 200 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division race at South Boston Speedway.

Smith, in a dominating performance, led all 200 laps of the 200-lap race and drove away from the field in a 53-lap green-flag sprint to the finish. He finished 3.018 seconds ahead of runner-up David Quackenbush of Lorton, Va. to take the $5,000 first prize.

David Triplett of Durham, N.C. finished third with Dane Rudolph of Wamberal, Australia and Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, N.C. rounding out the top five finishers.

Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va., Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C., Eddie Johnson of Midlothian, Va., Josh Oakley of Rougemont, N.C. and Jonathan Bailey of Buffalo Junction, Va. completed the top ten finishers in the 33-car starting field.

Smith started on the pole and fended off an early challenge from defending NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Philip Morris

Morris, driving a Toyota, started backsliding through the field after the first 25 laps as Quackenbush, who started fifth, charged past Morris to take second place on lap 27. Morris eventually finished 14th, one lap down.

C.E. Falk III of Virginia Beach, Va., took second place away from Quackenbush on lap 77 but Quackenbush rallied late in the race and regained second place for good on lap 163.

Shortly after that, Falk, who started sixth, began to fade and Triplett, who started seventh, moved up to take over third place.

McCaskill, the division points leader, started 14th and raced his way to fifth place. His closest challenger in the points standings, Justin Johnson of Durham, N.C., finished 15th a lap down after being involved in a mishap with Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C.

Smith averaged 64.725 mph in the race that was slowed by six caution periods.

Pembelton Takes Limited Sportsman Win

Brian Pembelton of Amelia, Va. scored his fourth win of the season Friday night, winning the 100-lap Limited Sportsman Division race, the longest and richest race of the season for the division.

Pembelton’s win came by a margin of .706 second in the race that was decided in a two-lap green flag sprint to the finish following the race’s final caution period. The race had to be extended to 117 laps to accommodate a green-flag finish.

Jeb Burton of Halifax, Va. edged Cory Donley of Winston-Salem, N.C. in a near photo-finish for second place with Justin Snow of Danville, Va. and Greg DeJarnette of Gladys, Va. rounding out the top five finishers.

Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. led the first eight laps of the race before his car crashed into the third turn wall while he was battling Pembelton for the lead.

Pembelton took over the top spot on lap nine and held on the rest of the way. He averaged 57.754 mph in the race that was slowed by six caution periods and one red flag.

Milam Wins Pure Stock Race

Jarrett Milam of Ringgold, Va. took the lead from Chris Crosby of Raleigh, N.C. with 21 laps to go and held on the rest of the way to win the 50-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.

Milam held off his challengers in a three-lap green-flag sprint to the finish that followed the last of the race’s three caution periods, edging Crosby by .581 second.

Jack Milam of Ringgold, Va., Mickey Cassidy of Ringgold, Va. and Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.
