Roanoke, VA. --
Michael McGuire has had ups and downs in his early stock car racing career, but probably not in a span of 24 hours. That is exactly what the young racing talent had happen on June 6th and June 7th.
Michael and the team traveled to Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, NC to compete in their 50-lap Limited Sportsman race on Saturday evening June 6th. The driver and team had finished in the top three in their first two outings at Orange County so far in 2009.
The car was very comfortable to Michael in pre-race practice sessions and the team was very optimistic going into qualifying. Michael had a good lap but it only put him fourth in the field of eleven.
Michael's car was good and luck was on his side this night. He drew the pole position after the top cars in qualifying picked numbers for their feature race starting positions.
The draw was good luck, but Michael and the crew had the car on a rail as he led all 50 laps of the feature in his Bill's Auto Sales, Wood's Towing and Recovery, Autism Speaks, Computer Maintenance Alternatives, Hannabass & Rowe Collision Center Chevrolet Impala to take his first win at OCS. He jumped to the lead and was never passed, surviving a few restarts along the way.
The up side continued on Sunday afternoon at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway, VA as Michael and the team got ready to race in Left Turn Promotions' running of The Professional Security Services Old Dominion Shootout 100-lapper for Late Model Stock Cars.
The team and driver looked to make their second race at FCS in 2009 as good as the first one. That first race resulted in a visit to victory lane on April 4th.
Michael paced both pre-race practice sessions and the team looked forward to qualifying. Michael qualified third for the race as the top six drivers were separated by one tenth of a second on the tight three eighths mile bullring.
The start of the race in the heat of the day made the cars a handful, but Michael managed to make his way to the point at lap 2.
The down side of the weekend was ready to bite the young up and coming driver as he was leading the race by nearly a whole straight away. Going in to turn one all power left the engine and Michael coasted to pit road.
The car was very good but ignition troubles ended the day for the team, leaving them with a ninth place finish. The day was not a total loss for the team as Michael gained experience against veterans such as Jimmy Mullins and Rodney Cook, along with another up and comer in Darrell Wallace, Jr., who went on to win the race.
Michael and the team look to continue their string of strong runs at Orange County when they head back to Rougemont, NC on Saturday evening June 13th. Michael is third in the Limited Sportsman point standing at OCS, four behind the leader Joey Throckmorton.
