Hampton, Va. --

Four track championships will be decided this Saturday, Sept. 24, when Langley Speedway closes out its 2005 points season with Coca-Cola Night at the Races. This week’s feature lineup includes: Chick-fil-A Late Models (75 laps); Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks (40 laps); nTelos Super Streets (50 laps); and, Hillco Building Maintenance Mini Trucks (25 laps). As part of Saturday’s pre-race festivities, several local racing luminaries will be recognized, including Bruce Warren and Al Grinnan, who recently was the subject of a lengthy feature article in the (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot. One of Grinnan’s old race cars will also make a couple laps around the track.

Gates open at 12 noon. Practice gets under way at 1:30 p.m. and qualifying begins at 4. Pre-race activities start at 6:30 and the first feature race goes green at 7. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. “Little Race Fans” (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Also, there’s no charge for military members in uniform. “Family Packs,” which include two adult and two children’s tickets, are $25 — a savings of $5. Skybox seats are available for $25 apiece. There is no charge for parking.

• • • As we head into Saturday’s points finale, let’s take a look at the four remaining championship battles and what the leaders will need to do to maintain their positions: • Chick-fil-A Late Models — Tommy Cherry holds a 12-point edge over Danny Edwards, 982-970. Cherry can wrap up the crown by finishing sixth or better. Edwards holds a 5-4 advantage in race wins, the first step in a tiebreaker. • Super 8 Motels Grand Stocks — Dean Shiflett enjoys a 22-point margin over Ryan Nester in the Grand Stock standings, 860-838. Shiflett was able to open some breathing room by winning last week, while Nester was swept into a massive pileup on lap 2 and finished ninth. An 11th-place finish in this week’s race would be enough to deliver the title to Shiflett. Should it come down to a tiebreaker, Nester has seven wins to six for Shiflett. • nTelos Super Streets — Steve Dill is 14 points ahead of Mike Ganoe in the chase for the Super Street title, 598-584. Since he owns the tiebreaker edge over Ganoe, eight wins to three, Dill can secure the ‘05 championship by finishing eighth or better on Saturday. • Hillco Building Maintenance Mini Trucks — The closest points battle is in the Mini Truck division, where Hugo Belfiore holds an 8-point edge over both John Hollis and Charlie Barclay. Belfiore has 694 points, while Hollis and Barclay have 686 each. With a tiebreaker edge over both of his challengers, Belfiore can clinch the title by finishing fifth or better in this week’s event.

• • • Langley’s weekly “test and tune” session is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22. Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and practice rounds run from 5 ‘til dark. Pit admission is $10 with a valid NASCAR, INEX or Langley Speedway license. For those without a current competition license, entry into the pit area is $20. There is no charge for grandstand admission. A summary of practice actitivities will be available at www.langley-speedway.com on Thursday evening. In the menu on the homepage, click on “Results,” then follow the appropriate link. Practice results will be posted to the Web site shortly after the session ends.

• • • The 2005 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series points season came to a close last weekend and Langley Late Model leader Tommy Cherry ended up sixth in the final Division I rankings. Peyton Sellers of South Boston (Va.) Speedway claimed the Division I title with 1,114 points. That tally was also good enough to bring Sellers the national championship. Tim Karrick of Linn County Speedway in Pleasanton, Kan., was the Division I runner-up with 1,092 points, followed by Nick Parker of Rocky Mountain Raceways in West Valley City, Utah, with 1,064. Tom Charles of Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., was fourth in the final rundown with 1,058 points, just edging Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., who wound up with 1,056. Cherry ended the divisional season with 1,052 points. With his sixth-place finish, Cherry will garner at least $8,500 in NASCAR bonus money. That total will increase to $10,500 if he hangs on to win the Langley Late Model title this Saturday.

• • • In determining its divisional leaders during the ‘05 season, NASCAR awarded bonus points based on the number of cars each driver competed against in each race. For a starting field of 21+ cars, 20 bonus points were awarded. For 15-20 cars, 10 bonus points were given. No bonus points were given for a starting field with less than 15 cars. Cherry collected 20 bonus points in 18 of 21 races at Langley. The Late Model field fell short of the 21-car mark on three occasions — July 16, August 6 and August 27. Cherry posted 10 bonus points for those three races. How important were the bonus points? If he had picked up the maximum number of bonus points, Cherry would have ended up with 1,064 divisional points — the same as third-place Nick Parker.

• • • With the help of the local Dodge dealers association, Langley Speedway will close out its 2005 season on Saturday, Oct. 1, with an eight-race slate. That evening’s feature program, which will begin at 6 p.m., includes: Late Models, Grand Stocks, Super Streets, Mini Trucks, Cook’s Moving Service INEX Legends, E-Z Auto Rental U-Cars, HRKC Winged Pro Champ Karts and Affordable Marine Services Mini Cups. Hobbytown USA will be on hand for a demonstration of its remote-controlled racers. The season-ender will be broadcast live on RaceTalkLive.com.

• • • Langley’s “Extreme Sports Wednesday” programs, which feature 1-on-1 drag races, burnout competitions and runs against the clock, will continue through Oct. 12.

• • • The Tidewater Mopar Club will hold its annual fall car show at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Oct. 8.

• • • The track will host its “Inaugural Parts Swap & Flea Market Sale” on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. ‘til 3 p.m. There will be a $25 fee for sellers. For more information, call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE.

• • • Langley Speedway will put the cap on its ‘05 campaign on Saturday, Oct. 29, with the Annual Awards Banquet. The event, which promises to be a lavish affair, will be held at the new Hampton Roads Convention Center in Hampton. Tickets, which include dinner, the awards presentation and dancing, are $45 each. For more information or to reserve your seats, call Sandra Emerson in the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or stop by during business hours.

• • • A longtime member of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va. To learn more about Langley Speedway and its schedule of upcoming events, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or visit the track’s Web site — www.langley-speedway.com.
