South Boston, VA. --
Defending South Boston Speedway champion Wayne Ramsey of Amherst, Va. has not had many opportunities to race this season.
But he took advantage of the opportunity to compete in Saturday night’s Charles Anderson Lawn Care 150 racing program in a big way.
Driving a Ford owned by Robert and Charlie Long, Ramsey pulled away from his challengers following the race’s final caution period and drove to a 1.218-second win over David Quackenbush of Lorton, Va. in the 150-lap race for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car Division.
The win was Ramsey’s first of the season and the victory made him South Boston Speedway’s sixth different winner in the season’s first eight races.
Nick Smith of Hampton, Va. finished third with pole winner Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C. and Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, N.C. rounding out the top five finishers.
Ty Dillon of Welcome, N.C., Michael Hardin Pomfret, Md., Laura Hayes of Wilton, Cal., Justin Johnson of Durham, N.C. and Rick Gdovic of Yorktown, Va. completed the top ten finishers.
Defending NASCAR national champion Philip Morris of Ruckersville, Va. started on the outside pole and led the first 57 laps. He was sidelined in a mishap that occurred on lap 57 as he and Smith were battling for the lead.
Ramsey, who was running third at the time, inherited the lead and fended off challengers the rest of the way.
Ramsey averaged 67.009 mph in the race that was slowed by five caution periods.
Snow, Pembelton Split Limited Sportsman Twinbill
Justin Snow of Danville, Va. and Brian Pembelton of Amelia, Va. split wins in the pair of 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division races with Snow taking the first race and Pembelton prevailing in the nightcap.
In the first race, Snow inherited the lead on lap 27 after race leader Jeb Burton of Halifax, Va., who had been involved in a mishap with Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. the previous lap, was forced to serve a penalty for alleged rough driving.
From there, Snow held off Brandon Gdovic of Yorktown, Va. by 1.041 second to score his second win of the season. Burton rallied from the rear of the field to finish third with Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va. and Pembelton rounding out the top five finishers.
In the second race, Pembelton took the lead from Burton on lap 23 and held off George Spencer of Halifax, Va. by .226 second to pick up his third win of the season.
Peregoy finished third with Mike Jones of South Boston, Va. and Burton rounding out the top five finishers.
Throckmorton Takes Pure Stock Win
Joey Throckmorton of Scottsburg, Va. came from the rear of the field after being involved in a first-lap mishap to win the 30-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division.
Throckmorton took the lead from defending division champion Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, Va. on the 23rd lap and held on the rest of the way to score his first win of the season.
The win made Throckmorton the fourth different winner of the season in the Pure Stock Division.
Randy Hupp of Halifax, Va. finished second with Allred finishing third. Jack Milam of Ringgold, Va. and Chris Crosby of Raleigh, N.C. rounded out the top five finishers.
Lacks Takes Win In Southern Vintage Modified Division
Darryl Lacks of Goode, Va. led all the way in winning the 25-lap race for the Southern Vintage Modified Racing Association.
Donnie Lacks of Goode, Va., Jerry Scott of Mebane, N.C., Ricky Seay of Bassett, Va. and Daryl Gwynn of Reidsville, N.C. rounded out the top five finishers.
