FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Fans attending this Saturday’s May 23rd World of Outlaws Sprint Car sanctioned Paul Sawyer Memorial to be held at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway will get the chance see some exciting racing and also help out in the fight against breast cancer.

Before the green flag drops fans will have the opportunity to bid on a helmet that Virginia Motor Speedway Sprint Car competitor Mary Anne Williams had autographed by each of the World of Outlaws drivers that competed in the inaugural Paul Sawyer Memorial to help raise funds for research done by the Susan B Komen for the Cure organization.

“Mary Anne (Williams) is a great competitor and an outstanding person. We are excited to help Mary Anne in her efforts to raise awareness of this illness and to help raise funds for Richmond affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure,” commented track General Manager Clarke Sawyer.

Mary Anne Williams herself is a beneficiary of recent breast cancer research. Williams, a regular in the track’s New Generation Racing Sprint Car Division, had stage 2 cancer when diagnosed, which fortunately had not yet spread to her lymph nodes. This made her a candidate for a newly developed gene test called Oncotype DX. This test looks at 21 different gene markers, and determines the likelihood of recurrence, and the benefits of certain types of therapy. This test said that she had about the same (low) chance of recurrence both with and without chemotherapy so she was able to bypass the harsh additional treatment. This enabled her to recover relatively quickly from her surgery, and radiation treatment. In fast she was able to return to work 1 month after surgery, and to racing at VMS four months following surgery. One year later, with the addition of a new diet & exercise program, she actually feels healthier and stronger than she did before her diagnosis.

“I am very grateful to be alive and well 1.5 years after my own breast cancer diagnosis. I am running my sprint car at VMS this year with the Susan G. Komen "Race for the Cure" logo displayed. I want to use this opportunity to raise awareness of the risks, the importance of early detection and the need for routine exams. I also want to raise funds for the Komen Richmond affiliate to support their work in our community,” commented Williams.

Williams had the custom painted Simpson helmet autographed during last year’s inaugural visit by the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series to VMS and the State of Virginia.

“I'd like to help other women as I have been helped by supporting research to develop better treatments, and to eventually find a cure for this disease,” added Williams.

One in eight women will be stricken with breast cancer in her lifetime. The Susan G. Komen Richmond, VA. affiliate uses funds raised to support education, screening & treatment programs in our community, as well as supporting national research to find a cure.

“We appreciate the enthusiasm of Virginia Motor Speedway and Mary Anne Williams in organizing this breast cancer awareness event. Your support of Komen's mission to end breast cancer as a life threatening disease means our message can reach more women and potentially save more lives,” commented Linda Tiller, Executive Director of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Richmond Affiliate.

Fans will get the chance to meet Williams up close and in person as she we have her car the helmet on display near the front entrance. Fans are encouraged to stop by and get a closer look at the helmet to be auctioned off, make a donation or get information about the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
