Chris Ferguson Victorious in Cherokee Speedway Return
May 11, 2009 - updated May 11th, 2009 10:27am
Web posted by

Gaffney, SC. --

Chris Ferguson and his Mt. Holly, North Carolina based race team returned to one of their home tracks, Cherokee Speedway, on Saturday night for their super late model weekly racing action. With several regional rainouts and off weekends for some, Cherokee Speedway drew an eighteen car field filled with regional standouts. Those included five-time Carolina Clash champion Ricky Weeks, two-time Southern All Stars East champion Dennis “Rambo” Franklin and perennial Cherokee front runner Jeff Cooke who was aboard a Kelly Hamrick owned Bloomquist chassied machine.

Ferguson put up the number everyone was looking to beat in qualifying with his lap of 15.761 seconds. “I left something on the table on the first lap for sure. I pushed up getting into two and hurt the lap. So I knew I had to really hit it on the second lap and we turned in a good time. I believe it could have been better but I was glad to take it. There were a lot of good cars there and we were real happy to be starting up front.” Ferguson said. Weeks took the outside of the front row with Franklin, Ross Bailes and Petey Ivey rounding out the top five qualifiers.

Ferguson paced the field as they headed to the green flag for the twenty lap feature but it was Weeks who got the jump on his fellow Carolina Clash competitor. Weeks jumped to the lead entering turn one as Bailes moved up to battle door to door with Ferguson. The two young guns waged an all out war for the first three laps, racing wheel to wheel and door to door. Ferguson averted disaster when Bailes looped his machine as they raced. Ferguson squeaked by suffering only minor right side damage. “It was fun racing with Ross like that again. We raced each other in crates and tonight was the first time he has ever raced a super.. He did a good job and we look forward to racing him more now.”

Ferguson resumed the second position on the restart and gave chase to Weeks. A few laps later Ferguson slipped high in turn two allowing Franklin to grab the runner-up position. Ferguson drove his car high into turn three and cut back to the bottom off of turn four to pull even with Franklin. Both drivers fought for the same real estate entering turn one and both drivers nearly hit the inside wall after they made contact. The contact sent Ferguson up the track and briefly broke his momentum which allowed Ivey and Cooke to slip by on the inside.

Ferguson refocused on getting back to the front with fourteen laps in the book. A late race restart saw Cooke move up to the top side and take the lead from fourth in a single lap as the top three hugged the bottom. Ferguson followed suit on the top and moved back by Ivey. Weeks suddenly slowed exiting turn two collecting Franklin and drawing a red flag as the track worked to remove the damaged machines. When the field went back to green Ferguson followed in Cooke’s tracks off of turn four and entering turn one. Ferguson dove to the bottom entering turn one while Cooke rolled to the top of the track and went pitside with mechanical problems.

Ferguson coasted over the final four laps to take his first win of the year at Cherokee Speedway and his second of 2009. “We had a really good car and almost let it get away. I wasn’t sure when we got to Cooke if we could get by him, but I was sure gonna try it... I hated to see him have a problem because it would have been fun to race him for the win. But we still had fun tonight and I am very proud of our team. I want to dedicate this win to my mom and step mom for Mothers Day. They both mean the world to me and to this race team and I love them both.” Ferguson said in victory lane.

“It is always cool to be able to come here and race and it is even cooler to get a win against these guys. I mean at one time tonight the top four was Weeks, Franklin, Ivey and Cooke. That’s old school around here. I appreciate the history of this place. I mean I grew up watching those guys race here and to be able to race with them is just special for me. And to actually be able to beat them here, well it’s just a neat deal for me. We have a lot of support over here too and it’s always nice to get to see some of our sponsors and fans that we haven’t seen in a while.”

Ferguson would like to thank all of his fans for their continued support and friendship. Ferguson would also like to acknowledge all of his 2009 sponsors which include: Carver and Sons Roofing, Firestone Building Products, Hal’s Plumbing, Max Baxter Roofing, Clements Race Engines, Sisco Fire and Safety, Heintz Performance, Eagle Manufacturing, Ferguson Interior Finishing, J&S Reel Logging, Barnyard Utility Buildings, Speedway BBQ, Big A’s Custom Graphics, KELCAR Motorsports Media, Photos by Ali, Indocil Art, X-Tream Cleaning Products, Eibach Springs, R-E Suspension, Bearden Oil, Sunoco Race Fuels, Butler Built, Bell Helmets, Performance Friction Brakes, Dixie Dirt Productions, Beyea Headers, Racing Optics, Schaeffer Racing Oil, Sweet Manufacturing, Alpha Canvas and Awnings and Peterson Fluid Products.
