Greg Edwards qualified to start second during time trials Saturday night with a 16.720 (seconds) lap time. The wheel was spun landing on #2 - which inverted him to the pole. The Chick-Fil-A Late Model’s came out in full force tonight, with 28 cars qualifying in time trials.
Pre-race events featured everything from the USS Enterprise Color Guard and Drill-Team to a UCAR Driver’s Wedding. Saturday Night’s races were sponsored by Miller Lite; presented by Tri-Cities Beverages.
On the start, Greg pulled ahead to hold his place and stayed in the lead. The first caution of the night came out on lap 15 when the #47 and the #13 got into each other on the front stretch. On the re-start, Greg pulled ahead of the field until lap 25 when he made the decision to hang back and not push the car. By hanging back, this gave Greg the chance to save his tires for remaining 75 laps of the race.
The second caution of the night came out on lap 54 when the #29 spun out in turn 2. With a quick recovery, the race was back under green and until lap 64 when the #29, #53, and #42 got into each other coming out turn 4. As the three cars spun into each other, the rest of the field was coming into the turn at full force. The #41 of Phil Warren tried to slow down coming out of the turn and inadvertently spun backwards sliding in to the wreckage.
On the restart, it would only be a matter of seconds until the next caution would be out. Just as they entered the first turn, seven cars piled up in the turn. As the safety crew rushed to the accident, the excitement continued as yet another vehicle (which had been towed to the rear of pit lane from the previous accident) proceeded to catch fire under the hood. As if all of this wasn’t bad enough – at the same time, the emergency response had to respond to another driver who was experiencing signs of dehydration in the pits.
Back under green, and the “race was on”. Greg and #40 Mark Wertz took off on the start and by lap 75, they were just more than a straight-away ahead of the rest of the field. Running in 4th place was Greg’s brother Danny. For the last 25 laps, Greg took on Wertz for the lead, brother Danny took on the #21 of Tommy Cherry for 3rd. With just a few laps to go, Danny and Tommy took turns in 3rd until the final lap when Danny gave it all he had coming out of turn 4. With just a hoods length, Danny took 3rd from Tommy giving DODGE the top 3 in Victory Lane! Finishing order: 1st - #40 Mark Wertz for his first victory of the season, 2nd - #27 Greg Edwards and 3rd - #26 Danny Edwards.
