Doggett Drives To A Smooth 4Th In First-Ever Limited Late Model Race
Mar 23, 2009 - updated Mar 23rd, 2009 7:24pm

Newton, N.C. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:March 23, 2009

After months of testing and preparation, Ruther Glen, Virginia’s Taylor Doggett finally drove his first limited late model feature Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway. In what was a chilly opener at the famous .363-mile North Carolina oval, Doggett had a superb night. The 16-year-old racer qualified the Orion Motorsports-owned No. 24 fifth in the 15-car field, and drove to a fine fourth-place finish in the 35-lap feature.

The feature saw only one caution on Lap 29. Doggett followed his Orion teammate, Brandon Cox, for the entire race. Both Doggett and Cox drove smooth, negotiated lap traffic well and accomplished solid third- and fourth-place results for the Taylorsville, N.C., based team.

“I have to be happy with the night,” said Taylor following his first pavement late model main event. “First, I need to thank everyone who is making this possible. My parents and grandma have helped out so much, and everybody at Team Full Throttle and Orion Motorsports have been great. We’re really pleased to start the season off with a fourth-place run. We’ll keep working to get the car better and improve.”

The night’s only mishap for Doggett came after the checkered flag flew. In a strange incident, Doggett stopped on the front-straightaway before he was to go to the scale area. Before he could move his car and go to the scale, another car accidentally backed over the front of his Orion late model. The damage was minimal, and Doggett laughed about it in the pit area after the race.

“Yeah, I’m not sure what happened there,” said Taylor with a laugh. “Being my first race at Hickory, I wasn’t sure if they wanted the top five or top three on the front straightaway for interviews. So I was in the wrong place to begin with, and then I saw the guy backing up his car and I said, ‘He sees me, he sees me.’ Well, I guess he didn’t and I couldn’t move the car in time. There’s some front-end damage but it’s nothing we won’t have fixed before next week. I guess now I’ll have a better story to tell about my first race at Hickory!”

Doggett’s tentative plans include racing the full season in the limited late model class at Hickory. The next race is this Saturday, another 35 lapper for the limited lates.

Taylor Doggett is a 16-year-old racer from Ruther Glen, Va., a northern suburb of Richmond. He has a number of years of experience on the dirt, most recently at Virginia Motor Speedway’s half-mile oval in the late model sportsman class in which he accomplished a number of top-five finishes in two seasons of competition. Doggett looked terrific in his initial tests on the pavement at Hickory and Tri-County (N.C.) Motor Speedway. Now, he has his first top-five result in his first pavement late model start.

Doggett is a member of the Team Full Throttle Driver Development Program and is represented by Driver Development Services, Inc., Charlotte, N.C.

Team Full Throttle is a Mooresville, N.C., based driver development program that specializes in all areas of personal and professional development, including leadership, teamwork, and communications as well as marketing, promotion, and on-track driving skills. TFT currently comprises over 30 racers who reside and race in all regions of the country.
