Update - Langley To Host UCAR Championship Event In October '06
Wednesday, January 18, 2006
Recognizing the tremendous growth in UCAR racing, both locally and throughout the region, Langley Speedway has announced plans for the Inaugural Virginia State UCAR Championship, to be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Hampton facility.
UCARs, sub-compact cars with only very minimal modifications, have been added to the regular lineups of several tracks over the past few years as a low-cost, entry-level option for aspiring drivers. The name of the division, actually an acronym for “U Can Afford Racing,” says it all.
Since the introduction of the class, interest in UCAR competition has taken off. In 2005, 55 different drivers started at least one UCAR event at Langley Speedway. And, an informal jaunt around the Internet reveals that well over 200 drivers participated in UCAR races around the region last season, making the prospects for a big championship event enticing, indeed.
At this point, the plans for Langley’s event call for an extended-length feature race with a very generous payout. Details, such as race procedures, the qualifying format, rules considerations for visiting drivers and a final purse schedule, are being worked out by Langley officials and will be announced when they are finalized.

B&C Seafood, owned by Bill and Ed Mullis, has signed on as the title sponsor for Langley Speedway’s new Modified division, which will make its debut on Opening Night ‘06 — Saturday, April 8. B&C Seafood offers its fresh, local catch right from its boats to the customer.
In other sponsorship news, Super 8 Motels will return as the title sponsor for the Grand Stock class, partnering with Dunkum’s Machine Shop. The division will be known as the Super 8 Motels/Dunkum’s Machine Shop Grand Stocks.

The Virginia Vintage Race Group will add an “old-school” flavor to Langley’s May 20 lineup. The organization was founded on a belief in preserving the true spirit of vintage racing and its members compete in machines from 1970 and earlier.

Pre-season open practice at the Speedway kicks off on Saturday, March 18. Other open sessions are slated for March 25 and April 1 — also Saturdays. The practices will run from 10 a.m. ‘til 4 p.m. Technical and safety inspections will be conducted on each car before it is allowed on the track.
Pit entry for each open practice is $20 with the appropriate license and $30 without a license. Licenses will be sold during all three sessions. There is no charge to watch practice from the grandstand.
Drivers seeking to garner a little extra pre-season publicity for themselves and their sponsors should plan to be on hand for the March 25 practice, which will be Media Day at the track.
