South Boston Speedway News
Justin Johnson has sights set on claiming Late Model Stock Car crown at SoBo in 2009

South Boston, VA. --

New year. New team. New number. Same driver.

Justin Johnson of Roxboro, N.C. finished as the runner-up to Wayne Ramsey in the chase for the NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division championship at South Boston Speedway in 2008 despite posting multiple victories in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action on the famed four-tenths mile oval.

This year, Johnson, a senior at the University of North Carolina in Wilmington majoring in business management, hopes to take the next step — the one that will put his name in the history books as a champion at America’s Hometown Track. In 2009, Johnson will bid for his first Late Model Stock Car Division championship while piloting a Ford Fusion for Taylor Brothers Motorsports.

The #6 machine will feature sponsorship from Bailey’s Cigarettes and Puryear Tank Lines. More importantly for Johnson, it will feature a 22-year-old behind the wheel who knows his way around South Boston Speedway and also knows his way to Victory Lane.

“It’s tough to be a champion here,” Johnson said of South Boston Speedway, which is prepping for its 52nd season of NASCAR racing. “There are a lot of good drivers here every year, but I have always heard if you can win at South Boston then you can win anywhere.”

Johnson believes his chances to contend for the track championship in 2009 “are good” and he’s anxiously awaiting the drop of the green flag on Saturday, March 14, when the 2009 campaign will get underway at South Boston Speedway with a special 2 p.m. start.

Four races will be held in the season-opening event, including the battle for the NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division that will feature Johnson in his new ride.

Also scheduled for racing action at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval on March 14 will be events for the Limited Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Pure Stock Division and the Southern Vintage Modifieds.

Pit gates will open for the first event of the 2009 season at 9 a.m. on March 14 and practice for all divisions will be held from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Grandstand gates will open at noon and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 12:45 p.m.

Season tickets good for all events on the 2009 schedule are still available and are priced at just $175.

Prior to the season-opening race, South Boston Speedway will host an open practice session on Saturday, March 7. The open practice will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and the public is invited to watch the action from the grandstands free of charge. Pit gates will open on March 7 at 9 a.m.

For more information, visit the track’s Web site at www.southbostonspeedway.com or phone the track at (434) 572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540.
