19 Year Old Chase Mattioli Gains 27 Positions in 31 Laps
Feb 8, 2009 - updated Feb 8th, 2009 7:21pm
Web posted by

Daytona Beach, FL. --

For Immediate Release:February 8th, 2009

Starting dead last in the 43 car field, Mattioli drove his Liquid Fence / Advance Payment Services Chevy, fielded by Bobby Hamilton, Jr., with the skill of a season veteran.

"There is nothing to prepare you for drafting at over 200 mph with 42 other cars", Mattioli commented. "Practicing drafting with a few cars is nothing like being out there in race conditions with a full field. The forces are constantly changing and you are making split second decisions," Mattioli continued.

Mattioli turned his first Daytona laps in his ARCA RE/MAX car in December, turning the 3rd quickest lap of 62 cars in 2nd day single car runs, posting a 49.997 second lap for a speed of 180.011 mph. If Mattioli had been able to qualify and turn a lap that quick, he would have started 14th in yesterday's race, but Mattioli never got a chance to qualify.

"During practice on Thursday, we just could not get up to speed, Mattioli commented. "The crew changed almost everything and we still could not find out what the problem was. Final they decided it had to be the engine. Late Thursday we were able to get an engine from Bobby Gearhart and Friday, Bobby and his guys jumped in with ours and worked like crazy to get the engine in. We got it in, got in line to qualify, but did not get a chance. ARCA found something we needed to fix and we could not get it done in the 5 minutes they gave us, so we did not get a chance to qualify. I thought we were done, but a few minutes later, we found out that we had enough points from last year to get the last staring spot in the field. That had to be the very worst and the very best 5 minutes of my racing career and I cannot thank Bobby and Mrs. Hamilton and the guys enough", Mattioli continued.

Later in happy hour practice on Friday evening, Mattioli was back up to speed, posting the 19th quickest time of the practice.

"For the race, we had planned for me to stay in the back of the field for at least 40 of the 80 laps and hope that attrition and smart pit stops would get us up in the top 20." Mattioli was able to avoid an early wreck and moved from 43rd to 24th, sitting behind Frank Kimmel, 9-time ARCA-RE/MAX Champion.

"Chase had gained 19 positions in 20 laps, more than we thought he would gain all day, and we felt that he would learn more staying right behind Frank than playing it safe in the back of the field, commented Chase Crew Chief, Danny Gill. "Chase stayed right in his tracks and in fact had to trail brake (light brake under full throttle) to avoid over coming him. Each lap Chase beat my highest expectations and got better and better. Before long, he was up to 16th. He proved to me that he is an incredibly quick learner," Gill concluded.

"Mr. Kimmel is phenomenal, Mattioli commented. Watching him work the draft and the traffic taught me so much."

The day was not to be without drama, with Chase caught up in a wreck started by pole sitter Alli Owens. "My spotter guided me through the mess and I thought I was in the clear, but the car in front of me checked up and I had no where to go. We tore up the front end up pretty good and were done for the day, finishing 35th. With us able to going from 43rd to 16th in 30 laps, I think that we had a good shot at a top ten finish, but I guess we will never know," Mattioli concluded.

Mattioli will be back in Florida to co-drive with his cousin, Nick Igdalsky, in a Grand Am KONI Challenge Endurance at Homestead - Miami Speedway on March 15th, driving their Pocono Raceway / JBS Motorsports Mustang. His next scheduled ARCA-RE/MAX event will be at Talladega, AL on April 24th.

Chase Mattioli is the grandson of Pocono Raceway owners Dr. Joe & Dr. Rose Mattioli. On Saturday it was announced that Mattioli will become the first American born driver to be represented by CSS Stellar, one of the leading independent sports management companies in the world. Their other American based drivers include Dan Wheldon and Dario Franchitti. Mattioli is a freshman at Fordham University.
