Casey Smith Sees Good Run End Early in Snowball Derby
Dec 12, 2008 - updated Dec 12th, 2008 1:52pm
Web posted by

Austin, TX. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:12/12/08

It couldn’t have been more fitting to have Independence for the Blind of West Florida on the hood of the Casey Smith’s #99 Chevy Monte Carlo at day’s end of the 2008 Snowball Derby. What looked to be a run to the front in the early stages of the 300 lap race turned into an early exit for Smith due to a fellow competitor’s negligence.

After three days of practice and a fourteenth place starting position in the forty-one car starting field to back it up, the Casey Smith Racing team had finally found the complete package to compete up to the same standards they’ve held at other tracks around the Southeast such as Mobile and Opp, Alabama’s South Alabama Speedway. With positive reinforcement of qualifying and Saturday afternoon’s happy hour, Casey felt strongly about his chances to be standing in victory lane at day’s end.

“I think we are going to win this race, our car is really that good. At worst I know we have a top five car. If we can just stand clear of the carnage we should be there at the end with a shot at it and that’s all you can really ask for in this race, a shot,” noted Casey.

There was a good reason Smith was so excited and it quickly showed as the Austin, Texas driver needed just twenty laps to make it up to the sixth position. Being content with riding just outside the top five in the early stages of the race looked to be in the game plan until lap fifty-six when the caution flew for a spin of a lapped car in turn four. With the yellow flag out and caution lights displayed, Casey waived off his fellow competitors and began to slow down his #99 Rapid Disposal/ibwest.org Chevy Monte Carlo coming down the back straight-away only to be slammed into by part-time racer Tim Martin from Louisiana. The damage was enough to severely bend the rear clip of the #99 machine thus ending Casey’s run at capturing his first Snowball Derby win.

“I can’t freaking believe what happened out there! I guess between him (Tim Martin) not seeing the caution lights come on and the entire field slowing down and his spotter not telling him to slow down he didn’t know there was a caution. What a coincidence that we have the folks from Independence for the Blind of West Florida on the hood and we get ran over by a guy who can’t see past his nose of his race car. It’s just really frustrating to come here all the way from Texas and spend all the money we do to race this race and get taken out by a guy who hardly races enough to know what happens out on the racetrack,” stated Smith after the incident.

While the only thing the Casey Smith Racing team officially brought back home with them was a thirty-ninth place finish and a destroyed race car, it may have actually been much more.

“We may have had a rough Snowball but the way our car handled was unbelievable. I just hope even with the damage we suffered that we’ll be able to have as good of a car next year at Pensacola as we did this race. But now that ’08 is behind us it is time to rest up, thank everyone and anyone who has supported Casey Smith Racing this year and get ready for 2009,”said Smith.

Everyone from Casey Smith Racing would like to thank all of their supporters for the ’08 season and wish everyone Happy Holidays!
