Stephan McCurley Prepared and Confident for Snowball Derby
Dec 1, 2008 - updated Dec 1st, 2008 2:52pm

Pensacola, FL. --

PR Contact: Annamarie Strawhand

For Immediate Release:11/30/08

For late model racers across the country, the Snowball Derby, now in it’s 41st consecutive year attracts the best of the best in short track racing to Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida for a week each December. This event has become the most prestigious and high profile races for a driver and team to add to their resume; especially if you win it.

Eighteen year old race driving standout Stephan McCurley of Humble, TX has his eye on the coveted Snowball Trophy, and he has prepared his car, his team, and especially himself to bring it home this year.

“I’m racing against the best racers in the country, and it’s a 300 lap race. You have to beat them with patience and a good race set-up on the car. This race is won in the last 30 laps,” Says Stephan. “It’s all about being calm, saving your tires and good pit stops. This race is hard on tires, we will use three sets, and we have extra crew help that came with us from Texas. Having a good spotter is key too - Matt Smith will be spotting for me, and he’s also a driver, and I have worked with him all season; we have great communication.”

Stephan will be driving his family owned #1 McCurley Racing Ford with associate sponsorship from Effen Racing.com. The car will sport a new color scheme with black and teal blue and white. Stephan’s Dad, Mike McCurley will crew chief for Stephan. “We have been practicing at really good consistent speeds,” says Mike. “Stephan is coming here this year more confident in himself and the car. We had a great ‘08 season in ASA that prepared us better for this level of competition. We had bad luck last year with our first try at the Snowball, we fought engine problems and the set up was off. We only missed the race by one car. This year though we know what to do, we are ready, more experienced and we feel we have a shot at winning.”

Stephan knows what a Snowball win will do for his career, and he is completely focused on what he needs to accomplish this week. “I raced on a lot of different tracks this year with tough competition, and worked hard to get myself better and my race car. We had a lot of long nights at the shop, and hours on the road,” Says Stephan. “But I am glad I did all that now because I am twice as prepared for the Snowball than I was last year. Just in practice this week I could catch last year’s winner on my older tires. I also have been watching the competition and I know I have a serious shot at winning, I’m confident in myself, my car, my team, and my strategy.”

The McCurley Racing Team will post race updates on their website this week, and they hope the exposure they can get from a good run in the Snowball will help their 2009 sponsorship efforts. “We have worked hard on sponsorship all season,” Say’s Kristy McCurley, Stephan’s mom, and team owner. “We have great people that help us out, but we still need a major sponsor so we can keep Stephan racing at this level. We are a family funded and operated team, and Mike and Stephan do it all themselves. They are the underdogs compared to the highly funded teams they are running against, and I think we have proven that we can run with and out run the big dogs. Any sponsor coming on board with Stephan is going to be getting huge exposure because everyone is taking notice of him. He has earned much respect from the media and the racing community because he is doing it all himself and not with deep pockets. A sponsor to us is worth its weight in gold, and we appreciate and take care of them.”

Stephan hopes a successful Snowball Derby run will also open up some doors for him in his career. “I want to move up in racing, I feel I can bring a lot to a team, including my chassis and shock knowledge.” He Says. “I am not rich and I can’t buy my way in, so I am doing it the old fashioned way; hard work, dedication, and driving smart races.”
