Chub Frank Falls Short In Bid For Second Straight Dirt Track World Championship Victory
Oct 21, 2008 - updated Oct 21st, 2008 12:25pm
Web posted by

Bear Lake, PA. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:October 21, 2008

Chub Frank couldn’t recapture the magic that brought him a victory in last year’s Dirt Track World Championship event at K-C Raceway in Chillicothe, Ohio.

The 46-year-old star from Bear Lake, Pa., got off his title defense off t o a good start when he returned to the three-eighths-mile oval last weekend, setting the overall fast time (14.674 seconds) in Friday night’s 106-car group-qualifying session. But that effort proved to be the highlight of his trip to the 28th annual dirt Late Model spectacular.

Chub managed only a third-place finish in his 20-lap heat race on Friday night – good enough to transfer, but also only good enough for the 13th starting spot in Saturday night’s 100-lap, $50,000-to-win A-Main. He went on to finish a quiet 13th in the feature, one lap down to runaway winner Brian Birkhofer.

“We drew a good number and qualified well, but then it went downhill,” said Chub, who earned a $1,000 bonus from DirtonDirt.com for his fast-time award. “We just weren’t set up right. We just missed something.”

Chub lost a few spots at the initial green flag of the A-Main, but he spent most of the distance running just outside the top 10 in his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*. He was part of a conga-line of cars that was largely stuck in order.

“I don’t know if it’s because the clay (on the track) is shot, but that track just isn’t that racy,” said Chub. “It’s just so hard to pass there. Birkhofer found something and smoked everybody, but it seemed like everybody else ran the same speed and just stayed in line.”

Chub actually didn’t think his car was too bad, considering he could see eventual second-place finisher Shane Clanton ahead of him on the same straightaway as the race wound down. Birkhofer made him rethink the speed of his machine, however.

“I could still see Clanton when Birkhofer came up and just drove right by me to put me a lap down,” said Chub. “I just thought, Holy smokes, he’s flying out there.”

Adding further frustration to a disappointing weekend, Chub hit two deer with his hauler on his way back to Pennsylvania following Saturday night’s race. Both run-ins with the wildlife occurred near Columbus, Ohio – the first damaging the left side of Chub’s tow vehicle, and the second a few minutes later damaging the left side of his trailer.

Chub did report that the hauler damage fortunately happened to the areas that already sustained dents in a heavy Minnesota hail storm in July. He is scheduled to take his hauler and trailer back to S&S in Nebraska for repairs the first week in November.

Chub has no racing planned for this weekend. He will stay home to prepare for his final competitive appearance of the season from Oct. 29-Nov. 1 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., which hosts the postponed World of Outlaws Late Model Series Armour Vienna Sausage Showdown on Oct. 29 and VAULT World Finals from Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
