Orange County Speedway News
Oct 18th, Final Points Race

Rougemont, NC. --

A teary-eyed Stacy Puryear celebrated his first championship in 21 years of racing Saturday afternoon, taking advantage of a rare driving error by Orange County Speedway’s 2006 champion Terry Dease.
David Triplett Jr. of Timberlake led all 155 laps for a division-leading fifth victory of the season in TAG-OUT Late Model Stock Car competition on the three-eighths mile banked asphalt track. He waived a customary victory lap in deference to Puryear, who secured the title by finishing fourth.

South Boston resident Puryear was nearly speechless in reflection afterward: “No matter what happened this season, I kept my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He gave me the strength to get through the tough times and celebrate the good ones.”
Puryear started the race with a two-point lead over Dease that evaporated quickly after qualifying trials. Dease was the fifth fastest qualifier and got the third starting position in a drawing among the six fastest (Triplett drew the pole). Puryear qualified 12th, spotting Dease 18 points at the start.
Quickly working his way through the field, Puryear was attempting a pass of Ryan Gray of Raleigh for fourth place in the 40thlap when disaster struck. Gray turned Puryear sideways along the frontstretch and appeared to never lift the throttle. Puryear slid several yards, narrowly missing a concrete wall.

“I was in it to win it today,” said Gray, who finished second. “I’ve taken a lot of crap from several guys all year and I wasn’t going to give an inch this time.”
Puryear had to restart in 11th and said he “struggled to keep my composure because I was so angry. I just got back up on the wheel and was determined to not give up.”

Gray was pressuring Dease for third place 22 laps later when Dease lazily spun off the track’s second turn, erasing his brief points lead.
“I just lost it,” said Dease, who finished seventh. “I should have been riding and playing it safe, but I’m a racer. I was just pushing too hard. It really wasn’t my championship to lose anyway. I’ve been chasing Stacy all year and I congratulate him.”
Brian Cole’s fourth victory of the year was not enough to overtake Donald Brace of Apex for the track’s Limited Sportsman championship. Roxboro resident Cole took the lead from Tommy Peregoy of Clarksville, Va., in the 10th lap and led the rest of a 75-lap feature.
Brace, Limited Sportsman champion here in 1999, finished third and took the title despite a winless season. “I am glad it’s over,” said Brace, a semi-retired real estate investor. “I don’t think my nerves could handle another week of this. I think I will enjoy this championship more than the first one because I’m a little older.”
Cole, the 2006 OCS champion, finished a terrific season that included eight pole positions. “It was a great year, but we came up just a little short,” said Cole, who ended a mere four points behind Brace. “If I couldn’t win it, I am glad Donald Brace did. He has raced me clean all year and is one tough competitor.”

Troy Dowdy of Rustburg, Va., scored his first victory of the year here in a 35-lap Grand Stock race. Ray Ellington Jr. of Madison Heights, Va., wrapped up the Trailers of the East Coast division championship by finishing second.
Keith Langston of Pittsboro was crowned champion of the four-cylinder Pure Stock division. He finished third in a 20-lap race won by Jarrett Milam of Ringgold, Va. Langston was the track’s winningest driver in any division with six victories.
Daryl Gwyn of Reidsville won a 25-lap race for open-wheel Southern Ground Pounders Modifieds and Jimmy Whitaker was the Sportsman winner.
Johnny Johnson of Winston-Salem prevailed in a 20-lap race for the East Coast Flathead Ford Association’s vintage machines.
