Bud's Heating & Air Conditioning presents THE 3RD ANNUAL NIGHT OF DESTRUCTION at Langley Speedway
Oct 16, 2008 - updated Oct 16th, 2008 9:47pm
Web posted by Gary Daughtrey

Hampton, VA --

Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008

Over $6,000 in posted awards will be on the line this Saturday, Oct. 18, as Langley Speedway closes out its 2008 schedule with the Third Annual Night of Destruction presented by Bud's Heating & Air Conditioning, one of the season's most eagerly-anticipated events.

Saturday's lineup includes, in order: Tug of War Competition; Burnout Competition; Pushmobile Race; Bag Race; Engine Explosion; Piano Race; Appliance Race; the Return of the Black Bandit; Reverse Race; Enduro Race; and, Demolition Derby Doubleheader.

Gates open at 10 a.m. and safety inspections will be conducted from 10 'til 12 noon. A drivers meeting is slated for 12:45 p.m. and the competition gets under way at 1.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

For prospective competitors, rules and entry forms for Saturday's events may be found at the track's Web site - <www.langley-speedway.com>.

Here's a quick look at each of Saturday's events:
• Tug of War Competition (presented by Bayport Credit Union; $150 to win): Cars will go nose-to-nose. The object is to push the other car backward and past a mark on the ground.
• Burnout Competition (presented by Rocket Performance; $150 to win): A staple of the track's "Wacky Wednesdays" programs. The winner will be decided by crowd response.
• Pushmobile Race (presented by Moody's A.V.E.S.; $200 to win): In this new event, drivers will use their cars to push empty (driverless) cars around the track.
• Bag Race (presented by Waltz Engineered Sales; $300 to win): Each car will be carrying a driver and a navigator. The driver will have a bag over his or her head and will have to depend on the navigator for steering directions.
• Engine Explosion (presented by Hampton Roads Toyota Dealers; $200 to win): How long would an engine, drained of its oil and coolant, last under full acceleration? Five randomly-chosen fans will have a chance to guess and, then, we'll find out for sure. The fan with the best guess will pocket $200. This event is new for '08.
• Piano Race (presented by Peninsula Piano Rebuilders; $200 to win): In another new event, upright pianos will be loaded onto pallets, hitched to the back of cars and dragged around the track.
• Appliance Race (presented by Rocker Originals/Sucker Punch Sally's of Hampton Roads; $300 to win): The cars will start out in the pits. At the signal, crew members will strap an appliance to their cars and send them out for one lap around the track. After a lap, drivers will return to the pit lane and take on another appliance. The routine is repeated until each car is toting a refrigerator, a washing machine, a dryer, a dishwasher and a microwave oven. The object is to be the first to the finish line with all (or, at least, most) of the appliances still attached to the outside of the car. Any appliances that come loose will remain wherever they fall until the race is over. Slower cars with more appliances attached at the finish will be scored ahead of faster cars that have dropped appliances along the way.
• Black Bandit (presented by Extreme Automotive): Four drivers will be chosen to challenge the enigmatic "Black Bandit." They'll start out to his left, right, front and rear. The four drivers will have four laps to take out the Bandit - to disable his car or force him to quit. If they succeed, each of the four challengers will pocket $125.
• Reverse Race (presented by eDealer Services; $300 to win): Demonstrating that reverse gear is good for more than just getting the car off the hauler, drivers will compete going backward.
• 50-Lap Enduro Race (presented by Crossroads Cleaners; $1,000 to win, $500 for second, $300 for third): This race will feature street-style cars, modified only for safety.
• Demolition Derby Doubleheader (presented by Standard Welding; $500 to win each event): The object is simple - ram your fellow competitors, disable their cars and be the last car moving to claim the victory. Separate events for domestic and import cars are slated.

• • •

Drivers are encouraged to enter multiple events. A $500 bonus has been posted for the winner of the most events. Also, according to track officials, "surprise bonuses" will paid throughout Saturday's program.

• • •

In case of inclement weather on Saturday, the event will be shifted to Sunday, Oct. 19.

Langley Speedway will celebrate its 2008 campaign on Friday, Nov. 7, as the track holds its Annual Awards Banquet at the Hellenic Community Center on Traverse Road in Newport News, Va.
