Jonathan Bailey wins at OCS. Results- Oct 4th

Rougemont, NC --

Jonathan Bailey won a 150-lap Late Model Stock Car race at Orange County Speedway Saturday afternoon that included a little beating, banging, shoving and shouting as the TAG-OUT division title contest narrowed to just two points between Stacey Puryear and Terry Dease.
Bailey led qualifying trials and drew the second starting position. He took the lead from pole starter Dease in the 22nd lap and led the rest of the way. “I’m just racing for the fun of it and my crew made it awfully fun today with a car this good,” said Virginia resident Bailey of his first 2008 victory here. “There was a lot of stuff happening there behind me and I was glad to not be in the middle of it.”
The “stuff” Bailey mentioned included a spirited effort from South Boston’s Puryear to recover from a spin and pit stop to yank off a flapping fender. He was involved in two wrecks and drove through the field, edging Ryan Gray of Raleigh at the finish to take fourth place.
“I had a blast,” said Puryear, whose six point lead over defending champion Dease shrunk to just two points with an October 18 finale to decide it. “This was true, hard core short track racing. We were beating, banging and going at it. I wish every race was that good. The day could have been a disaster, but we’ll take fourth place and settle this championship deal next race.”
Dease’s celebration of a second place finish was interrupted by a shouting match with David Triplett, Jr., who came home sixth. The two crews had to be separated by officials after a brief shouting match ensued.
Triplett, a four-time winner this year, had overtaken Dease for second place in the 95th lap, but Dease came right back and nudged Triplett into a lazy spin.
“I got into him (Triplett) but I didn’t mean to spin him,” said Oxford resident Dease. “I’m just driving my tail off trying to win the championship and need every spot I can get.”
An angry Triplett shouted to Dease: “You said rubbing is racing, but I had you passed and then you wrecked me!”
Danny Willis Jr. of South Boston escaped a wreckfest behind him and won a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race. Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill led the first 10 laps before hitting a wall hard due to oil laid down by Jay Crawford’s blown engine. Willis inherited the lead and kept it the rest of the way.
Carver was taken away from his car in a stretcher. A spokesman for the team said he was treated in an ambulance and not seriously injured.
Brian Cole, whose car was moderately damaged in the same wreck, hung on for third place and trimmed fourth finisher Donald Brace’s lead in division standings to eight points. “I was fortunate it was just sheet metal damage and it didn’t destroy the rear gearing,” said Roxboro’s Cole. “It was unfortunate that Daryl got the bad end of that deal. It all happened so fast, there was nothing we could do.”
Carver’s title chances were effectively ended. He was credited with 15th in an 18-car field and fell 40 points out of the division lead with one race left.
Ray Ellington Jr. of Madison Heights, Va., was the beneficiary of two wrecks up front and took his first victory of the season in the Trailers of the East Coast Grand Stock division. Ellington led the final two of 37 laps and extended his lead in standings to 28 points over Cory Purnell of Yanceyville, NC, with one race remaining.
Lee Anderson of Gladys, VA, led the first 33 laps until knocked out in a crash with South Boston’s C.B. Elliott. Bill Edwards of Danville, VA, took over first until he and Purnell wrecked out in the ensuing restart.
Jack Milam of Ringgold, Va, won a 20-lap Pure Stock race. Keith Langston finished sixth and virtually sewed up his first division championship. Pittsboro resident Langston has a 52-point lead over Tony Ivey of Durham in an OCS system that awards as many as 52 points to a race winner. Langston will officially be the champion when he starts the October 18 finale.
Other winners on the three-eighths mile banked asphalt track were: Gary Lloyd, Southern Ground Pounders Sportsman; Daryl Gwyn, Southern Ground Pounders Modified; Jimmy Hill, Allison Legacy Series and Justin Ledouc, Virginia Mini Cup.
Orange County Speedway’s regular season will finish on Saturday afternoon, October 18, with a 150-lap Late Model Stock Car race as main event. A special 300-lap Late Model Stock Car race here on November 1 will not count toward the season title.
