Orange County Speedway News
David Triplett Jr. dedicated a victory to the victims of Hurricane Ike

Rougemont, NC. --

As a storm brewing for the Late Model Stock Car division championship intensified last Saturday at Orange County Speedway. a storm brewing for the Late Model Stock Car division championship intensified last Saturday at Orange County Speedway.
“We’re here having fun,” said Triplett after his fourth victory of the season, “but it will be a rough night for thousands of people in the Gulf Coast. Our thoughts are with them right now.”

Defending track champion Terry Dease of Oxford finished second after “rubbing” his way past title challenger Stacy Puryear, who took third. Dease shaved Puryear’s lead to just six points with two regular season events remaining.
Triplett was fastest in qualifying trials, but had to drive his way to the front from the sixth starting position. A track rule declares a division’s previous winner, Triplett on August 23, can start no better than sixth. He took the lead from Puryear in the 69th lap and led the rest of the way.

“My car wasn’t good as it has been lately,” said Triplett, a Timberlake firefighter, “but it got the job done. We won’t adjust on it much because the next two races here are daytime events.”
South Boston’s Puryear, seeking his first title in 21 years of racing, drew the pole and led the first 68 laps. He got out of his car fuming, refused to talk to reporters and declined a trackside interview. His car and Dease’s touched twice as they battled for second place at lap 106.

Race director Terry Deal said Puryear contended he was still the leader when the caution flag waved just as the front two cars had started the 69th lap. Puryear drove alongside Triplett’s leading car and remained there for two laps under protest. Deal said electronic scoring and a human back-up system both confirmed Triplett as leader just before the caution was displayed.
Dease drew the fourth starting position and slid back to eighth before rallying. He was riled up by a shove from Puryear’s car a lap after securing second place. “We were just rubbing and rubbing is racing,” said the Oxford mechanic, “but I didn’t like the shot he (Puryear) gave me after I passed him. He isn’t but six points ahead of me and that’s all I’m going to say about that.”
Fastest qualifier Chris Denny of Timberlake scored his first victory of season here in a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race. He got the pole position in a drawing among the fastest six teams and led all the way.
Brian Cole of Roxboro finished second and regained second in the points when rival Daryl Carver of Prospect Hill had a wreck-filled night. Donald Brace of Apex started seventh and finished third to preserve a precarious lead in standings.
A jubilant Denny said: “My brother Kevin set up my car and it was dead on the money. I got a little lead when those guys battling for the points went nuts behind me and I was able to hang on.”

Cole ran second almost all the way, but conceded that Denny “was really hooked up. I didn’t seem to have anything for him. I thought I was going to gain a few spots on (Donald) Brace, but he seems to be parked in the top three every week.”
Carver’s rough night began with a seventh-lap tangle with Jerry Hinesley of Durham. The wreck sidelined Hinesley, while Carver continued after a pit stop to remove sheet metal. Carver was battling for third place with Tripp Massengill of Creedmoor when the two clashed and hit the fourth turn wall. Massengill’s machine was knocked out, while Carver’s fender-less car limped home eighth as he dropped to third in the points.
Cory Purnell of Yanceyville won for the first time in his career in a 50-lap Grand Stock race, longest of the season in that division. He trimmed third-finishing Ray Ellington Jr.’s standings lead to 14 points.

Purnell accidently crashed into teammate James Myers’ car while attempting to retrieve the checkered flag in the cooldown lap. Danville, Va., resident Myers, 75, was unhurt and still smiling about a fourth place finish.
Ernie McBrew ended Daryl Gwyn’s dominance at OCS in a 25-lap race that combined three divisions for the vintage Southern Ground Pounders. McBrew won the open Modified class; Gary Lloyd was the Sportsman winner and Troy Gaston triumphed among the Limited Modifieds entered.
Matt Wade of Roanoke, Va., a two-time defending champion of the Virginia Mini Cup Series, won a 25-lap race for those scaled racing machines.
The chase for four division championships here will continue October 4 for a 2pm start at the three-eighths mile banked asphalt track.
