Kenly, NC --
It was the night for the Open Wheel Modifieds to shine at Del Richard's Southern National Raceway Park as the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour were on hand in front of a Spectacular crowd for the Whelen Night of the Modifieds 380 and what an exciting show it was. Fifteen drivers made the call for the NWSMT 150 lapper and with a new race time implemented for 6:00 pm, Race time was surely exciting for the fans as five events took the green flag from new SNRP Flagman Danny Willard and they got there moneys worth!!
The INEX Legends were in town at SNRP again and the 30 lap event was a National Qualifier, 10 drivers took the green light and then trouble in turn one when the #99x of Mark Markham and the #03 Matt Corbett got together and due to the fact no laps were complete they went back to original restart order. When they finally got underway, you guessed it, it was Fayetteville's Billy Gomez Jr. #66 to the front and stayed there for a good portion of the race but the #05 Brandon Thompson was coming and coming hard and on lap 14 he was able to get aroud Gomez out of turn 4 to take the lead. However a bad monkey was about to visit #05 Brandon Thompson and on lap 30 with 10 laps to the finish he breaks going back into one and gave the lead back to guess who?? Gomez. Billy Gomez went on to take the win, second to #24 Parker Hammonds a thrid went to #99 Alex Kempf fourth to Kara Clark and fifth to #29 Bobby Cannon.
After SNRP Announcer Phil Campbell hiped up the crowd with driver introductions it was time for the big daddy of the night the 150 lap NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour event, Fifteen of the best Open Wheel Modifieds drivers in the southeast took the green. Walnut Cove,NC #1 Burt "The Ace " Myers led the first 3 circuits around SNRP until #36 of Morresville,NC L.W. Miller got by him and stayed there for a pretty good while but the "The Ace" was waiting patiently and holding his line not to burn up the Hoosiers on the car to strike later.
The one and only Yellow cloth waved was on lap #36 when the NWSMT Points Leader going into the event at SNRP #23 Lexington,NC Brian Loftin tried to make it to the pits but failed and stalled just coming out of turn 4. When the field got back underway it was follow the leader and that man was Miller he recieved the Halfway Award but Burt Myers knew it was about time to lay his cards on the table and on lap 100 with 50 circuits to go "The Ace" drew a Full house to their feet when he relinquished the lead for good and carried #83 Tim "ROCKET" Brown with him as a wingman and they went on to be one and two in the NWSMT 150 Lapper in the end at SNRP.
Third went to L.W. Miller fourth to #47 Andrew Seuss and fifth to #28 Caraway winner George Brunnhoelzl III. It was a great race session as the NWSMT prepare for the Whelen 300 at Martinsville Speedway September 21st.
The fourth event on the race card was from the creative mind of Del Richards to put Dirt Super Late Models on the high banked SNRP for 40 laps Paying $4,000 Dollars to the winner and man WHAT A SHOW!!! Eight Dirt im sorry on this night Asphalt Super Late Models took the green and it was an all out war between #0 Greensboro's Ray Tucker and Kannapolis's #57 Wes Barton. At the initial start Tucker got Barton when he was sleeping and rocketed down the frontchute and cocked em sideways in one. The first Yellow flag fell on lap 2 when the #L1 of Spud Liles put fluid down on the track,at the restart Tucker and Barton made it a show of their own and began to persue lap traffic. A scary monent happened in the race when the lapped car of Cleveland,NC #42 Charlie Hanson was way off the pace going into turn one and Tucker had to make a quick daring move to the inside to avoid getting into him and safely was able to do so with Barton also dodging Hanson. The second yellow fell on lap #10 when debris was put down on the track and after the cleanup crew retrieved it quickly it was back to green. Four laps later the caution light went on again when Princeton,NC #D8 of Dustin Mitchell put fluid down on the speedway. After a lenghty caution it was back at it between Tucker and Barton and on lap #31 with 9 circuits remaining Wes Barton was able to get around Tucker for the final lead change and go on to claim the $4,000 payday and get the trophy. Sanford's #33 Chuck Smith finished third and rounding out the top five was #02 of Damon Kotke and #33H of Charles Hanson.
The final race of the evening was another touring division the Allison Legacy Series were on hand as Twenty young men and even a young lady led the field to the start of the 75 lap affair. At the initial start of the race some drivers didn't get through the gear box quickly and the only victim was #98 Hunter Woody who smacked the concrete on the frontchute. When they finally went to green the #68 of Michael Cooper led the warlords the first 10 circuits and then on lap 11 #52 of Austin Houge pulled to the inside off 4 and grabbed the lead. Second yellow flag fell on lap 49 when the #20 of Tanner Aman and the #72 of Harrison Rhodes collide on the frontstretch. On the restart it was the battle of Hogue and Cooper but who wanted it more. Back and forth they swapped the point and finally on lap 52 of 75 Hogue stayed at the front for good but the third caution would be displayed on lap 60 when the #60 of Tyler Speer crashed hard into the crossover gate on the backside but wasn't injured after impact and after quick cleanup racing resumed for the final 15 circuits. In the end points leader for the ALS coming into the event at SNRP would prevail and Hogue went on to get the win.
Second went to #28 Ryan Glenzki third to #4 Timmy Hill and rounding out the top five was #36 Paul Beckner and #68 of Michael Cooper.
