South Boston Speedway News
Morris will compete at SoBo Saturday in hopes of locking up a second NASCAR national crown
Sep 11, 2008 - updated Sep 11th, 2008 2:49pm
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, VA. --

Philip Morris is coming to South Boston Speedway Saturday night with one thing in mind — winning the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship.

Morris and other competitors from Motor Mile Speedway are expected to be on hand Saturday night when the green flag drops for the start of the Embarq presents Sunoco 150. The first of four races will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

The featured attraction of the night, the race Morris will be trying to win, will be a 150-lap shootout for the drivers in the NASCAR Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division.

Saturday marks the final night of competition for NASCAR points at South Boston Speedway and Motor Mile Speedway has already held its final NASCAR point races of the season.

Heading into the final week, Morris who won the national championship in 2006 is tied with Brian Harris of Davenport, Iowa. While the two are tied with 946 points each in the national title standings, Harris currently owns the tiebreaker with more wins than Morris.

For the season, Morris has notched 12 victories in 25 starts, but based on the scoring for the national title chase, he could possibly move ahead of Harris with a win or a second-place finish Saturday night at South Boston Speedway.

“It’s tough,” Morris said. “It’s going to be hard. If we win it, that’s awesome. If we don’t, we’ve still had a pretty amazing year.”

Morris has already locked up the NASCAR crown at Motor Mile Speedway and the state title in Virginia. And, he knows winning at South Boston Speedway on Saturday won’t be an easy task.

“It’s difficult when you go to another track,” Morris said. “You want to go to the track and be respective of the drivers that race there every week and be competitive.”

While Morris will be seeking to win to secure a possible national championship, Wayne Ramsey, a five-time winner on the four-tenths mile oval this season, will be looking to claim his first ever NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track championship.

Ramsey heads into the weekend with a 31-point lead over Justin Johnson, who has motored to four wins this season at America’s Hometown Track.

Lots of eyes will also be focused on the points battle in the Limited Sportsman Division where Lee Pulliam and Bruce Anderson are deadlocked atop the standings heading into their 50-lap final points event of the campaign. Anderson is the two-time defending champion of the division.

The champion will also be crowned in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division Saturday night. Joe Allred leads the title chase by 21 points over Courtney Crosby. Rounding out racing action on Saturday will be an event for the Yellow Book USA Southern Vintage Modifieds. The rain date for Saturday’s event will be Sunday, Sept. 14.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 1 p.m. with practice for all divisions beginning at 2:15 p.m. and continuing through 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 5:15 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 and children, ages 6 and under, will be admitted free. All youth must be accompanied by a paying adult to receive discounted admission.
