Pulliam: ‘Momentum is on my side’ in bid to dethrone Anderson as SoBo’s Limited Sportsman champion
Sep 9, 2008 - updated Sep 9th, 2008 4:33pm
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, VA. --

“It’s going to be huge.”

Those were the first words uttered by Lee Pulliam Tuesday when he was asked about the 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race Saturday night at South Boston Speedway. The event will mark the final points race of the season for the division.

Pulliam, a six-time winner this season at America’s Hometown Track, heads into the Limited Sportsman Division clash, which will be one of the featured attractions of the Embarq presents Sunoco 150, deadlocked with two-time defending champion Bruce Anderson. Both drivers have 358 points in the title chase, however, Pulliam is technically on top by virtue of his six wins compared to Anderson’s win total of four.

The first race of Saturday night’s NASCAR Whelen All American Series program will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

Despite the fact that the points race between Pulliam and Anderson is tied, Pulliam, who resides in Semora, N.C., believes he is the hotter of the two drivers heading into the final points race of the 2008 campaign.

“I feel like momentum is on my side right now,” Pulliam said. “I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t a little nervous, but I feel like we’ve got the momentum right now.”

Pulliam said he would not enter the race intimidated of Anderson and the fact that the South Boston, Va. driver has claimed the last two division crowns. The two got into a skirmish back in June when they crashed coming out of turn four racing to the checkered flag and, just recently, things got heated between the two again on Aug. 16 when the two got together during the first of two 50-lap battles on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

“We had another little scuffle about two races ago and that probably actually cost me locking up the points race,” Pulliam said. “We raced side-by-side for 30 laps and then got together and I wound up getting black flagged for rough driving, which cost me a lot of points.”

Pulliam finished 11th in that race, but followed up that finish later in the night with his fifth victory of the campaign.

“You know if I hadn’t got that black flag, I think I could have been pretty close to locking this thing up already,” Pulliam added.

As fate would have it, however, Pulliam did get the black flag and heads into the final points event knowing all he has to do to lock up the championship is stay one position ahead of Anderson.

So, will he be keeping an eye on where Anderson is on the track Saturday night?

“No doubt,” Pulliam acknowledged. “We know what we have to do Saturday and I feel like we will get it done. We’ve been working day and night on this car. It’s going to be a huge night.”

While many eyes will be focused on the battle between Pulliam and Anderson Saturday night, many will also be anxiously awaiting the green flag for three other action-packed events.

The Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division champion will also be crowned Saturday night at the close of a 150-lap race. Wayne Ramsey, a five-time winner this season, inched closer to locking up his first NASCAR Whelen All American Series crown on Aug. 30 with a victory.

Ramsey will head into the final points race of the campaign with a 31-point cushion over four-time winner Justin Johnson. Deac McCaskill is third in the standings and owns a 39-point lead over fourth-place Dude Gibbs.

The champion will also be crowned in the Budweiser Pure Stock Division Saturday night. Joe Allred leads the title chase by 21 points over Courtney Crosby. Justin Tucker is third in the championship chase, just six points behind Crosby and only two points ahead of Michael Jones.

Rounding out racing action on Saturday will be an event for the Yellow Book USA Southern Vintage Modifieds. The rain date for Saturday’s event will be Sunday, Sept. 14.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 1 p.m. with practice for all divisions beginning at 2:15 p.m. and continuing through 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 5:15 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 and children, ages 6 and under, will be admitted free. All youth must be accompanied by a paying adult to receive discounted admission.
