Ramsey Inches Closer To SBS Title With Win
Aug 31, 2008 - updated Aug 31st, 2008 11:07am
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, VA. --

Wayne Ramsey inched himself a little closer to the championship in the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division with a win in the 150-lap NASCAR Late Model Stock Car Division race that highlighted Saturday night’s Spaulding Equipment Co. presents GCR 150 racing program.

The win was the fifth of the season and the second in a row for Ramsey.

Ramsey started on the pole and led all 150 laps, pulling away from runner-up Deac McCaskill of Raleigh, N.C. in an 83-lap green-flag run to the finish. Ramsey’s margin of victory was .656 second.

Going into Saturday night’s race, the next-to-last points race of the season, Ramsey held a 22-point lead over Justin Johnson of Durham, N.C. Johnson needed a win to cut into Ramsey’s lead but, instead lost ground to the points leader. Johnson now trails by an unofficial 31-point margin heading into the season’s final points race here on Saturday night, September 13.

Ronald Hill of Rougemont, N.C. finished fourth with Owen Miller of Emporia, Va. rounding out the top five finishers. Jason Dickerson of Ruckersville, Va., Jonathan Bailey of Keysville, Va., Stacy Puryear of South Boston, Va., Jon Denning of Springfield, N.J. and North Carolinian Kenny Forbes completed the top ten finishers.

Ramsey averaged 80.180 mph in the race that took 45 minutes and 14 seconds to complete. The race was slowed by two caution periods.

Pulliam Wins Limited Sportsman Race; Deadlocks Points Race

Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C. entered Saturday night’s 50-lap Limited Sportsman Division race trailing two-time and defending Limited Sportsman Division champion, Bruce Anderson of South Boston, Va. by seven points in the chase for the track’s Limited Sportsman Division crown.

Pulliam did exactly what he needed to do – win the race.

Starting on the pole, Pulliam led all 50 laps of the race, edging Anderson in a 10-lap sprint to the finish that followed the last of the race’s two caution periods. The win was the sixth of the season and the second in a row for Pulliam.

Pulliam’s margin of victory was 1.432 seconds.

The win by Pulliam and the second-place finish by Anderson unofficially created a tie for first place in the division points standings. The championship will be decided in the season’s final race on September 13.

Danny Willis Jr. of Cluster Springs, Va., Tommy Peregoy of Red Oak, Va. and Jeb Burton of Halifax rounded out the top five finishers.

Pulliam averaged 48.491 mph in the race that took 24 minutes and 55 seconds to complete.

Edwards Wins Pure Stock Race

Bill Edwards of Ringgold, Va. started on the pole and led all the way in winning the 30-lap race for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, which ended with two of the front runners crashing on the front stretch on the final lap coming to the checkered flag.

The win was Edwards’ first of the season and it made him the seventh different winner in the division this season. His win also snapped a four-race win streak compiled by Jarrett Milam of Ringgold, Va. Milam was involved in an early-race mishap and finished 12th.

Edwards’ win came in a thrilling finish that saw second-place runner Michael Jones of South Boston, Va. and third-place runner Justin Tucker of Elon, N.C. crash on the front stretch as they raced to the checkered flag and, at the same time, were attempting to overtake Edwards.

When Jones and Tucker collided and crashed into the wall, Tucker’s car slid across the finish line with enough momentum to get him second place. Randy Hupp of Halifax. Va. squeezed by to take third place and Jones was credited with a fourth-place finish. Courtney Crosby of Scottsburg, Va. rounded out the top five finishers.

Joe Allred III of Scottsburg, Va., the division points leader, entered the race with a 23-point edge over Crosby in the chase for the division championship. Crosby ended the night unofficially trailing Allred by 21 points.

Lacks Wins Southern Vintage Modified Race

Darryl Lacks of Goode, Va. started on the pole and led the entire distance in winning the 25-lap race for the Yellow Book USA Southern Vintage Modified Division. The win was the second of the season for Lacks.

Lacks began the night trailing Randy Smith of Bassett, Va. by 10 points in the chase for the division championship. Smith encountered mechanical problems early in the race and was forced to the sidelines after 12 laps, relegating him to an eighth-place finish.

The combination of circumstances of Lacks winning the race and Smith’s eighth-place finish unofficially thrust Lacks into the points lead heading into the season’s final points race on September 13. Lacks’ unofficial lead is nine points.

Donnie Lacks of Goose, Va. finished second, Jeff Tate of Ruffin, N.C., Bill Lacks of Goode, Va. and Phil Barkins of Dover Del. rounded out the top five finishers.
