NASCAR crown at South Boston Speedway would ‘mean the world’ to Wayne Ramsey
Aug 28, 2008 - updated Aug 28th, 2008 4:04pm
Web posted by Tim Chandler

South Boston, VA. --

"It would mean the world to me to have my name on that list of guys who have won championships there.”

South Boston Speedway is steeped in history in its 51 years of NASCAR competition and Wayne Ramsey is certainly aware of it. Just two days before heading into the next-to-last points race of 2008 for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division at South Boston Speedway, Ramsey took a few minutes Thursday to talk of his title hopes.

With just two races left to decide the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Car crown at America’s Hometown Track, Ramsey owns a 22-point cushion in the title chase over Justin Johnson. Both drivers have collected four wins this season at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval.

“I’m more excited than nervous,” Ramsey said of the championship chase, which will resume Saturday night when South Boston Speedway hosts the Spaulding Equipment presents the GCR 150 race program. “I am going to try to run like I have all season and try to block the points out of my mind.”

The 150-lap Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division race will be the featured attraction of Saturday night’s racing action. The first of five action-packed races will get underway at 7 p.m. Saturday.

The pending championship would be the first NASCAR crown for Ramsey and the Amherst, Va. driver says a crown of that magnitude would “certainly be very special.” While he will attempt to block the points chase out of his mind Saturday night, Ramsey admitted he would be keeping an eye on Johnson at the same time.

“You are always going to keep it in your mind a little bit,” Ramsey said. “The main thing is to try and do what I’ve been doing this year and not make any mistakes.”

If Ramsey is fortunate enough to score his fifth Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car win of the season Saturday night, he said he would feel “pretty comfortable” about his championship chances.

“The big thing this year is the bonus points,” Ramsey said. “You get five bonus points for winning a race, so that would be a big help. If we both go out there and finish second and third or something like that, it would still be fairly close. If either one of us get a win Saturday, it could mean a big swing in the points.”

Ramsey said that while winning a championship would be very special, he wants to do it with both he and Johnson running strong.

“Justin is a tough competitor,” Ramsey said. “He will be tough to beat. I don’t want for either one of us to have any bad luck. I want us to be able to race it out and see how things turn out.”

The final race of the NASCAR points season will be waged at America’s Hometown Track on Saturday, Sept. 13.

Also in action Saturday night will be the Limited Sportsman Division in a 50-lap shootout. Two-time defending champion Bruce Anderson, a four-time winner this season, leads four-time winner Lee Pulliam by a slim seven points heading into Saturday’s next to last race of the points season.

Other events slated Saturday night include races for the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, the Yellow Book USA Southern Vintage Modified Division and the MACKA Kart Racing Series.

Joe Allred leads the title chase in the Budweiser Pure Stock ranks by 23 points over Courtney Crosby and by 33 points over Michael Jones, however, Jarrett Milam is the division’s hottest driver as the season winds down. Milam has motored to four consecutive victories in the division.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 1 p.m. with practice for all divisions beginning at 2:15 p.m. and continuing through 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 5:15 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 and children, ages 6 and under, will be admitted free. All youth must be accompanied by a paying adult to receive discounted admission.
