Virginia Motor Speedway News
Virginia Motor Speedway to Host Community Hero Night and four divisions of action this Saturday August 30th
Aug 25, 2008 - updated Aug 25th, 2008 2:02pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA --

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway returns back to action this Saturday August 30th to host Bill Hudgins Pontiac – GMC / Capitol Boiler Works “Community Hero” Night. All police, fire, rescue or military personnel will be admitted free with I.D. The Speedway will also have as special guests the VA Army National Guard 237th Engineer Company (Sapper) out of West Point, VA which has just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq.

The night’s events will feature Round 3 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T.

The four race series offers a bonus program for multiple wins by a driver. The Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge will pay a $5,000 bonus to anyone winning two of the four events; it goes to $15,000 if a driver can win three of four events; and finally, if a driver sweeps all four events that driver would pick up a cool $25,000 bonus.

The first two rounds of the series were won by different drivers which means there will be no $25,000 bonus paid out again this year. Walker Arthur of Forest, VA picked up the win in round one with Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA holding off Arthur for the round two win. Both drivers are eligible for the $15,000 bonus, but one of them must sweep the final two rounds of the series. Track rules for the Victory Lap Late Model Division will apply.

Also see the Truckin Thunder Sportsman, Budweiser Modified and New Generation Racing Sprint Car divisions in action. Come experience the raw, pure excitement that is dirt racing!

Competitor gates for Saturday, August 30th will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30pm with hot laps. Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday August 30th: Victory Lap Late Models (40 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (25 Laps); Budweiser Modifieds (25 Laps); and New Generation Racing Sprint Cars (25 Laps). All divisions will run Hot Lap Time Trials and Features.

Adult admission is just $12, Senior and Military $10, Students 13 –17 yrs old $7, Children 7 – 12 yrs old $4 and Children 6 and under free. The Speedway offers a Family Pack for two adults and two children 12 and under for only $24. Also check our website for discount coupons. -- CALENDAR UPDATE: The Speedway will take the September 6th weekend off due to the NASCAR events at Richmond International Raceway and return back to action on Saturday September 13th for WIGO “Kids in Uniform” Night. All children in a Boy Scout, Girl Scout, baseball, soccer or football uniform will be admitted free. All five of the track’s weekly divisions will be in Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship action. The night’s events were supposed to include the crowning of all five divisions champions. With all the rain outs this season the final points races will now be at the 39th Annual Fall Classic Saturday September 20th. -- POINTS BATTLES TIGHT: The point’s battles are heating up as the season begins to wind down. In the Victory Lap Late Model division Walker Arthur of Forest, VA goes into this weekend with a four point advantage over Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD.

The Limited Stock Car point battle got interesting this past weekend with Bob Terry of Stafford, VA closing to within 8 points of current point leader Wesley Givens of New Kent, VA. Terry went into Friday night’s race 20 points behind Givens.

The race for the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Championship gets tighter and tighter each week. Budweiser Modified point leader Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA and Truckin Thunder Sportsman point leader Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA have the upper hand with five wins a piece, but New Generation Racing Sprint Car point leader Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC has crept back into the race with his fourth win of the season this past weekend. Also, joining Bolac with four wins are New Generation Racing Sprint car defending champion Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg, PA and Victory Lap Late Model point leader Walker Arthur of Forest, VA. -- FRIST TIME WINNERS: This past Friday night’s action produced two career first winners as 16 year old Joey Polevoy of Powhatan, VA won the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature and 19 year old Sam Archer of Waldorf, MD took home the checkers in the Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature. -- MUD BOGGING TIME: The 4th Annual Run A Muck Mud Bog and Mud Sling at “The Pit” is quickly approaching. Rules and registration will be available in the next week or so.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, an ASA Member Track affiliate, is a ½ mile dirt oval track located on U.S. Route 17, eight miles north of Saluda, VA and 25 miles south of Tappahannock, VA in Jamaica, VA. The speedway is just a short drive from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Southern Maryland and the Hampton Roads area.
