NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

Late Model Twin 100s, Annual "Track-A-Thon" set for Saturday night Thursday, August 21, 2008

With the 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season edging toward its conclusion, and with national and state championship points at a premium, a stellar field of Late Model Stock Cars (including nationally top-ranked Philip Morris) is expected this Saturday, Aug. 23, as Langley Speedway hosts Retail Alliance Night.

The evening's feature slate is highlighted by a pair of 100-lap contests for the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars. The races will be run back-to-back with a short intermission in between and each event will carry a full complement of NASCAR and track points. Time trials will determine the starting lineup for the first race, while the finishing order of Race #1 will set the grid for Race #2.

In addition to the LMSC Twin 100s, presented by Hampton Chevrolet, Saturday's lineup includes: Super 8 Motels/B&B Engines Grand Stocks (40 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto of Newport News UCARs (25 laps); and, Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).

Gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice rounds run from 2 'til 4, followed by a drivers meeting at 4:15. Time trials get under way at 4:30. Rev. Tom Potter, Langley's chaplain, leads the annual Victory Junction Gang Camp "Track-A-Thon" at 6:30. Pre-race ceremonies begin at 6:55 and the racing program starts shortly after 7.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

Saturday's "Track-A-Thon," to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, N.C., is one of the Speedway's most eagerly-anticipated charity events of the season. Participants will gather sponsors, then set off on a two-lap stroll around the track. (Rollerblades, wheelchairs and non-motorized scooters and bikes may be employed.)

Trophies will be presented to, among others, the driver with the most sponsors, the sponsor giving the largest donation, the fan with the most donations, etc.

Founded by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their late son, Adam, the Victory Junction Gang Camp opened in June 2004 with the stated mission of providing fun and life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses in a safe and medically sound environment. Richard and Lynda Petty donated 72 acres of land for the camp, which enjoys strong support from the entire NASCAR community.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., sits atop the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national top 500 for a third straight week. With nine wins and 18 top-five finishes in 20 starts, he holds an 11-point lead over Marty Ward of Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina, 907-896. Brian Harris of West Liberty Raceway in Iowa is third, just nine points behind Ward.

Local competitors in the national rankings include: C.E. Falk (26th); Greg Edwards (90th); Danny Edwards Jr. (138th); Jeff Shiflett (224th); Nick Smith (306th); Mark Wertz (346th); Dean Shiflett (362nd); Matt Waltz (449th); and, Shawn Balluzzo (456th).
