Jamaica, VA. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

When the racing community comes together great things can happen; that was the case this past Saturday night at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway when the Speedway held a food drive for the Central Virginia Foodbank. With the generosity of the of the fans, competitors, Pepsi Bottling Company, Comcast, Sports Radio 910, 102.1 the X and 104.9 WIGO the Speedway was able to collect over 3500 pounds of food and $412.00 in cash donations.

“We couldn’t be more proud of our fans and competitors for stepping up and donating so much needed food to the Central Virginia Food Bank, we also have to thank Pepsi and our media sponsors for all their help, we could not have put together such a successful food drive without their support,” commented track General Manager Clarke Sawyer.

Virginia Motor Speedway provided anyone that donated four non-perishable food items to the CVFB a free ticket to the races.

The Central Virginia Foodbank (CVFB) was founded in 1980 to procure and distribute food efficiently and effectively to feeding programs throughout the area. Since then, the Central Virginia Foodbank service area has grown to include 31 counties and five cities in the Central Virginia region. Presently, they distribute food through a network of more than 500 network partner agencies, which includes more than 130 child care providers serving needy children. In addition, they serve as many as 4,000 daily meals in the summer and 2,000 daily meals during the school year to needy children through their 42 Kids Café and 13 Café for Kids programs.

The amount of food they distribute has steadily grown over the years. In fiscal year 2005-2006, they distributed more than 12.9 million pounds of food to the hungry. The CVFB receives donated food from food manufacturers and grocers, the USDA, community and company food drives, and from individual donations of food and money. In fiscal year 2005-2006, food drives provided more than 1 million pounds of food.

Currently the CVFB is in dire need of donations, requests for assistance are at an all time high. To make a donation call (804) 521-2500 to find a donation location or to get their mailing address.
