Virginia Motor Speedway News
Walker Arthur tops in Victory Lap Late Model feature at Virginia Motor Speedway
Aug 17, 2008 - updated Aug 17th, 2008 9:09am
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA --

Shelton, Folmar and Terry all return to victory lane

Walker Arthur of Forest, VA captured Saturday night’s 35 lap Victory Lap Late Model feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, VA, leading all 35 laps in his #87 Cecil B Arthur Beef Farm / PMZ Group / Chevrolet Monte Carlo Rocket.

Arthur and Stevie Long of Mechanicsville, MD went into the night tied for the lead in championship points. It was Long setting fast time gaining three points on Arthur in the point battle, but Long then pulled a four putting Arthur on the pole for the start of the 35 lap feature.

On the drop of the green flag Arthur darted out to the lead followed by Long, Stephen Evans, Brett Carlton and Joey Bounds.

Arthur worked his way to a five car length advantage with Long battling Evans for second. Working his way into the top five Tom Cohick battled with Carlton and Scott Adams finally taking fourth on lap 22.

On lap 23 Cohick got inside Evans in turn 2 taking third. Arthur was never seriously challenged on way to his third win of the season.

Trailing Arthur to the checkers were Stevie Long, Tom Cohick, Stephen Evans and Brett Carlton. Carlton was the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race with the fifth place finish.

In other action Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA led flag to flag to pick up his fifth win in a thrilling Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 feature. In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg, PA took the lead from Tom Humphries of Waynesboro, VA on lap 12 and then cruised to his fourth win of the season. The Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature turned out to be a thriller as Bob Terry of Stafford, VA outlasted Ryan Toole and Kevin Fletcher for his second win of the season.

The Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature may have been the best race of 2008. Kenny Moreland of Waldorf, MD and Tim Shelton of Fredericksburg, VA led the field to green with Shelton emerging with the lead out of turn 2 to lead the first circuit.

Moreland would not let Shelton get away and kept steady pressure on the division’s point leader. On lap 12 Moreland gave Shelton a little bumper trying to rattle his cage a bit in turn 1. Shelton would have non of it as he kept Moreland at bay.

The battle for the lead allowed Tony Wood to reel in the top two and make a move of his own for the lead. On lap 13 Moreland tried again to get to Shelton’s inside with no luck as they began to work slower traffic. On lap 16 Shelton made a bold three wide move in traffic to gain some space while Moreland and Wood went three wide for second.

On lap 18 Wood would make a tremendous move and split a slower car and Moreland to take second out of turn 4. The battle for second allowed Shelton to get a few car lengths on his closest competitors. On lap 22 Moreland wrestled his way inside Wood out of turn 2 to try and retake second. The two battle over the next two laps side by side until Wood took control of the position.

Shelton would cruise to his fifth win of the season followed to the checkers by Tony Wood, Kenny Moreland, Roger Jamerson and Walker Arthur. Jimmy Duncan was the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race with a sixth place finish.

In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Michael Tolley of Ashland, VA and Troy Severin of Ashland, VA led the field to green with Tolley leading the first circuit.

On lap 3 tom Humphries of Waynesboro, VA worked under Tolley in turn 3 pulling side by side down the front stretch and then pulling off the slide job in turn 2 to take over the top spot.

Humphries would pace the next eight laps with Craig Folmar and Daren Bolac closing as the trio worked slower traffic. On lap 11 Humphries decided to work slower traffic on the high side as Folmar dove to the low groove with Folmar taking the lead out of turn 4.

Once out front Folmar worked the slower traffic to perfection to cruise to his fourth win of the season. Following Folmar to the checkers were Daren Bolac, Troy Severin, Charlie Fasano and Eric Keck who started shotgun on the field.

In the Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Brian Maxey of King George, VA and Ryan Toole of Richmond, VA led the 26 car field to green with Toole taking the lead out of turn 2 with Kevin Fletcher in second.

On lap 5 Fletcher worked inside Toole for the lead out of turn 2 at the same time Bob Terry worked inside Davey Pullen for third.

On lap 13 Terry worked inside Toole for second and set out to catch Fletcher for the lead. On lap 14 Terry dove his Chevrolet inside the Chevrolet of Fletcher with the two touching as they exited turn 2. On lap 15 Terry once again got to the inside of Fletcher this time the two raced side by side down the backstretch. As they entered turn 3 Toole made it three wide for the lead.

Fletcher held on for one more lap before Terry finally pulled off the pass on lap 16 out of turn 4. Terry would hold on for the victory with Ryan Toole, thirteenth starting James Givens, Kevin Fletcher and Wesley Givens rounding out the top five.

In the Limited Stock Car “B” Main lee Overstreet of Midlothian, VA held off Travis Hopkins of Spotsylvania, VA for the win.
