After missing from Hickory Motor Speedway’s late model field for about a month, David Latour Jr. returned to the .363-mile oval Saturday for a special 100-lap feature for the Bojangles’ late models. Latour qualified third for the 100-lap grind and remained in that position for majority of the race on his way to a solid third-place podium finish.
Latour, 17, admits the caution flags didn’t fall his way throughout the second half of the extra-distance feature.
“On short runs, we had a third-place car, but on long runs I think we had the best car,” says Latour. “We’re happy though; it was our first time back at Hickory with the big-spring setup and the car is definitely more consistent. It still gets a little tight, but it doesn’t get progressively worse as the runs go on. It just gets a little tight and stays consistent there through a run.”
Latour says a big help came from Barry Elvis, the crew chief on Woody Howard’s Hooters Pro Cup team.
“Barry was a big help and we really appreciate it. He saw some things that were binding in the car and helped us with the setup and we can’t say enough about his help. We just needed a long green flag run toward the end and I think we might have got our first late model win. We’ll keep going after it and try to get that first win,” Latour added.
This weekend, the Latour Motorsports team is tentatively planning a doubleheader. On Friday, they’ll travel to Tri-County (N.C.) Motor Speedway for late model twin 35-lap features. The team plans to return to Hickory Saturday for a regular 50-lap feature.
