Blake Jones Claims Atlanta’s Thursday Thunder Championship

Sevierville, TN. --

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:August 8, 2008

11-Year-Old Bandolero Racer Becomes Youngest Young Guns Series Champ

Blake Jones entered the 2008 racing season in the Bandolero Bandits division, but decided to move up to the more competitive Young Guns division to get experience against the more experienced older racers. This season was to be a learning year, where the 11-year-old Tennessee racer was to race his #80 Mountain Dew Bandolero at multiple tracks to continue his climb up the racing ladder.

Early-season achievement put the young driver on the fast track to success. Victories at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (NC) during the Winter Heat Series as well as wins at Music City Motorplex (TN) and OCR Action Sports Park (NC) made him a threat for the win at every track. When he entered the Thursday Thunder Series at Atlanta Motor Speedway (GA), he had one thing on his mind: the championship.

After 10 rounds of racing action during the summer, Jones has emerged as the 2008 Young Guns champion, the youngest driver to take the title in series history.

With weather playing into the schedule this season, the final two races were held on Thursday, August 7th. Jones held the points lead by a slight margin before race day and just had to keep the momentum going in the season-ending events to become the champ.

“I was excited on one hand, but I was nervous on the other,” said Jones. “I would have liked to have a bigger points lead prior to the final two races, but we were able to pull it off and win the championship.”

After finishing the first race in third, Jones and his team figured out they needed to finish fifth or better in the second race to win the title. Jones ran in the top-five during the event, crossing the line in fifth.

“I was just driving for points. I wasn’t going for wins at that point,” said Jones. “I knew where I needed to finish, so I just paced myself on the track. I ended up getting shuffled to the outside and settled in to fifth, and that is where I stayed.”

Young Guns racer Dustyn Cunningham won the second race, but he came up two points short of taking the title from Jones.

“Dustyn was a great competitor all season long,” added Jones. “I want to congratulate him and his team on winning the final race and having a great season.”

Still, though, it was Jones who enjoyed the spoils of the night as he was crowned the Young Guns champion in his first season in the division.

“We are the youngest driver to win the Young Guns title. I cannot be happier. I have to thank my parents, my nana and my team for their hard work this season. Also I have to thank all of my sponsors for their support, including Mountain Dew, Sevierville Import and Truck Center, Chambers Market, Bakers Wrecker Service, D&S Builders and Prestige Car Wash. This championship is theirs as much as it is mine and I cannot thank them enough for their support of my racing career. This is just awesome.”

Jones will take a few days to enjoy his championship before strapping back in his #80 Mountain Dew Bandolero at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, on Tuesday, August 12th, for the final round of the Summer Shootout Series. Jones currently sits seventh in points and is one of only three Bandolero Young Guns drivers to grace victory lane in the 10-round series this season.
