There’s still more than a month until race number three of the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model National Championship Series, but teams up and down the East Coast are already making preparations. The first two National races have been held in North Carolina, while the third race will be held on September 21st, headlining the PASS 400 weekend at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough Maine. Several teams from the PASS South region have already confirmed that they are planning to make the long trek to New England.
Atop that group of Southerners heading north is the surprising leader of the PASS National standings, John Stancill. At just 15 years of age, everything Stancill has done in 2008 has exceeded expectations. Stancill came to the PASS South Series as a Legends car standout with similar credentials to those of other PASS drivers such as Ryan Lawler and Corey Williams. In the first PASS National race at the Hickory Motor Speedway, Stancill started an unassuming 26th and shocked the crowd in attendance by coming home with a third place finish. PASS National race number two at the Orange County Speedway saw Stancill lead laps and come home with a fourth place finish. That finish in the Southern Sizzler has put Stancill atop the National points leading the likes of Cassius Clark, Mike and Ben Rowe, and Corey Williams. What makes that accomplishment even more amazing is the fact that Stancill and his team are racing on a very limited budget. A budget so tight he was unable to race at the most recent PASS South event at the Dillon Motor Speedway. Nonetheless, Stancill and his team are heading to Beech Ridge with the hopes of protecting their lead in the PASS National standings.
Unlike John Stancill, everyone knew that Alex Haase would be a driver to watch this year. And sure enough, as Haase became more comfortable with his surroundings, he became a consistent front runner week in and week out. Wins at Wake County and Greenville-Pickens have put Haase third in points with a shot at the PASS South championship. Haase and his Kyle Busch-owned Toyota team aren’t strangers to racing with PASS North in 2008 either. Haase has already competed in the two PASS North events at Beech Ridge this season finishing 17th and 29th respectively. Obviously those results are not what he was hoping for, but they’ve given Haase and his team an idea of what they need when they head back to Beech Ridge in September.
“We’ve got another car up North, separate from the car that we race in the South and I think we can go up to Beech Ridge and have a chance to win,” said Haase. “The guys that take care of the car in the North do a really good job and I know we can do better than what we did when we go back to Beech Ridge.”
Perhaps the driver traveling the farthest distance to get to Beech Ridge will be Perry Brown. The Florida native has had an astounding start to his first full-time season in PASS South competition. Brown took a dominating win at the Watermelon Capital Speedway in Georgia and has followed that up with seven top tens, good enough for second in PASS South points. In addition, Brown has finished in the top ten in both PASS National races and will enter Beech Ridge fifth in National points.
Several other top PASS South contenders will be attending, plus some of the best Super Late Model racers in the country for race number three of the PASS National Series coming up on September 21st at the Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, ME.
PASS South takes a couple of well deserved weeks off before they hit the track again for the Piedmont Pride 125 on August 30th at the Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, NC.
