Hampton, VA --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

SunTrust Night set for this Saturday; Late Model Twin 100s announced for Aug. 23 Thursday, August 7, 2008

A 100-lap Late Model Stock Car feature tops a six-race bill this Saturday, Aug. 9, as Langley Speedway continues its 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season with SunTrust Bank Night.

This week's lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars (100 laps); Super 8 Motels/B&B Engines Grand Stocks (40 laps); Med Express Urgent Care Super Trucks (25 laps); E-Z Auto of Newport News UCARs (25 laps); Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks (25 laps); and, Standard Welding Pro 6s (30 laps).

Gates open at 1 p.m., while afternoon practice runs from 2 'til 4. Time trials get under way at 4:30, immediately following a 4:15 drivers meeting. Pre-race festivities start at 6:55. The evening's feature program gets rolling shortly after 7 with the Wolf Trucks batting leadoff.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children, 6-12. "Little Race Fans" (under 6) are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Military members in uniform are also admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price. "Family Packs," which include two adult and two children's tickets, are $25 - a savings of $5.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly "test and tune" session this evening. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6. Pit admission is $10. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.

Langley Speedway's "Wacky Wednesdays" schedule continues on Aug. 13. The popular mid-week event features street cars in 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track), "Time Attacks" (solo runs against the clock) and burnout contests.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

In light of the recent rainouts that have plagued the "Wacky Wednesdays" series, the Speedway has extended the '08 season to Sept. 17. This year's schedule had been due to wrap up on Aug. 27.

• • •

For the first time in several weeks, no one will be bringing a two-race winning streak into Saturday's races, so time trial results will be the sole factor in determining the starting grids. By track rules, winners of two consecutive races can start their next feature from no better than eighth.

Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., has vaulted from fifth to first in the latest NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national top 500 rankings. Keith Rocco, who competes at Waterford Speedway, Thompson International Speedway and Stafford Motor Speedway (all in Connecticut), drops into second after leading the way since late June.

To determine the national champion, NASCAR takes each driver's 18 best finishes into consideration. Once a driver has reached 18 starts, any finishes that he or she posts from that point forward may be used to replace a poor outing from earlier in the season, typically resulting in only an incremental gain.

With 35 races under his belt, Rocco eclipsed the 18-race threshold long ago and has been inching ahead since then. Morris, meanwhile, just ran his 18th race last weekend and grabbed a 13-point lead over Rocco, 852-839.

Before Morris starts making room in his trophy case, however, he'll need to keep a close eye on veteran short-tracker Marty Ward of Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina. Ward is fourth in the current rundown, only 20 points back, and has one more race to go to reach 18 for the season.

C.E. Falk is the top-ranking local contender in the national standings, in 18th place. Other area drivers in the top 500 include: Greg Edwards (80th); Danny Edwards Jr. (130th); Jeff Shiflett (193rd); Nick Smith (326th); Mark Wertz (356th); Dean Shiflett (365th); Shawn Balluzzo (387th); and, Matt Waltz (413th).

In the Virginia state standings, Morris is the runaway leader. Falk is fourth, 28 points out of second. Greg Edwards is ninth, while Danny Edwards Jr. and Jeff Shiflett are 13th and 19th, respectively.

NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 16, when the track plays host to DUCTWORX Night at the Races.

The Aug. 16 feature slate includes: B&C Seafood Modifieds (75 laps), Bass Pro Shops Super Streets, Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks and Standard Welding Pro 6s.

In addition to a full evening of racing, early-arriving fans will be treated to a performance by Nate Sparks and the Pamunkey River Ramblers, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

• • •

For NASCAR national and state championship hopefuls (Attention, Philip Morris!), Langley Speedway will provide a golden points-gathering opportunity on Aug. 23. On that evening, the Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars are now slated for Twin 100-lap features. The races will be run back-to-back, with a short intermission.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.

To learn more about Langley Speedway, fans may call the Speedway office at (757) 865-RACE or consult the track's Web site - www.langley-speedway.com.
