South Boston Speedway News
Gordon seeking a victory in the “Miller Lite 250” presented by Strutmasters.com USAR Hooters ProCup Series Northern Division

South Boston, VA. --

Benny Gordon hopes to take care of some unfinished business Saturday night at South Boston Speedway when the USAR Hooters ProCup Series returns to the four-tenths mile oval for a second appearance of 2008.

Earlier this season, Gordon finished second to Dan Abold in a rain-shortened event. The race was halted after 161 of the 250 scheduled laps had been run.

At 7 p.m. Saturday night, the green flag will fall for the Miller Lite 250 presented by Strutmasters.com. If Gordon, the USAR Hooters ProCup Northern Division points leader, ends the night with at least a 100 point lead over Gary St. Amant, who is second in the standings, he will lock up his fourth Northern Division crown. Gordon currently leads St. Amant by 146 points.

While the Northern Division title is a key for Gordon, he told USAR Hooters ProCup officials this week that it is not the primary thing on his mind.

“I’ve got some unfinished business at South Boston,” Gordon said. “My goal is to win because we should have won the first race.”

Gordon sat on the pole for the April event at America’s Hometown Track, pitted early, charged back to the front and nearly grabbed the lead away from Abold on several occasions before rain shortened the race.

“I’m still not over that yet,” Gordon told USAR Hooters ProCup Series Public Relations Director Paul Warner. “I feel like I had the dominant car there and we only had to pass one more car and we would have won. I’m excited to get back there.”

As many as 32 cars could start the Miller Lite 250 presented by Strutmasters.com. The top 28 competitors in qualifying time trials will earn spots in the field. The remaining positions will be assigned by provisional starts.

The field of drivers will be chasing total posted awards of over $127,000. The race will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on the Versus Network on Monday, Aug. 18 at 4 p.m.

Saturday’s race at South Boston Speedway will mark the 15th appearance of the USAR Hooters ProCup Series at America’s Hometown Track. In the past seven events on the four-tenths mile oval, there have been seven different winners.

Several familiar names for South Boston Speedway fans are scheduled to try and make the field for Saturday’s USAR Hooters ProCup Series event. Among those are Jay Fogleman of Durham, N.C. Jonathan Cash of Oxford, N.C., who has been to Victory Lane in Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car competition at South Boston this season, Mark McFarland of Winchester, Va. David Quackenbush of Lorton, Va. and Brandon Ward of Winston-Salem, N.C.

In addition to the 250-lap race for the USAR Hooters ProCup Series competitors, there will also be an event staged on the four-tenths mile asphalt oval for the touring Allison Legacy Series.

Grandstand gates will open Saturday at 3 p.m. Qualifying for the Allison Legacy Series 50-lap race, which will follow the Miller Lite 250 presented by Strutmasters.com, will begin at 3:30 p.m. The USAR Hooters ProCup Series cars will then hit the track for qualifying time trials at 4:30 p.m.

An on-track autograph session with the USAR Hooters ProCup Series competitors will be held at 5:45 p.m. and will conclude at 6:15 p.m. to set the stage for the green-flag start of racing action at 7 p.m.

Adult general admission is $15 if purchased at the speedway prior to 5 p.m. Friday. Adult general admission price will be $20 Saturday. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $10 and children, ages 6 and under, will be admitted free. All youth must be accompanied by a paying adult to receive discounted admission.

The rain date for the Miller Lite 250 presented by Strutmasters.com will be Sunday, Aug. 10.

For more information, visit the speedway’s Web site at www.southbostonspeedway.com or phone the track at (434) 572-4947 or toll free at 1-877-440-1540.
