Hampton, Va. --

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at Langley Speedway

(July 31)

Five feature races are planned for this Saturday, Aug. 2, at Langley Speedway as the Hampton Roads Toyota Dealers and AMF Bowling team up to present Kids Night, event #16 on the track's 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series schedule.

Saturday's lineup includes: B&C Seafood Modifieds (50 laps); Bass Pro Shops Super Streets (50 laps); Peninsula Hardwood Mulch INEX Legends (25 laps); E-Z Auto of Newport News UCARs (25 laps); and, Rhonnda Claiborne, Realtor HRKC Pro Winged Champ Karts (20 laps).

Gates open at 1 p.m. Afternoon practice begins at 2 and wraps up at 4. The drivers meeting is scheduled for 4:15, followed by time trials. At 6:30, fans will be allowed on the track to meet and greet their favorite drivers. Pre-race ceremonies get under way at 6:55, while the Champ Karts lead off the evening's feature slate shortly after 7.

Tickets are $10 for adults. Military members in uniform are admitted free. Military members in civvies (active-duty or retired, with ID) and senior citizens (60+, with ID) receive a $2 discount off the regular adult ticket price.

For this Saturday's program, all kids, 12 and under, are admitted free. The first 200 youngsters through the gates receive a free T-shirt, compliments of Aard-Alltuf Screenprinting and Embroidery, and a free hot dog, courtesy of Tyson Foods. There will also be loads of games and prizes from AMF Bowling, Bubbles the Clown, 7-Eleven and others.

CBX Modular Homes has posted $500 in prize money for Saturday's Champ Kart race - $250 for the winner, $150 for second place and $100 for third. Ordinarily, the division competes for trophies, points and bragging rights.

Saturday's 20-lapper will mark the Champ Karts' first appearance as part of Langley's regular weekly show since a misfire on July 3. That event was marred by three caution flags in the first five laps, at which point officials decided to call a halt to the proceedings.

In the wake of that race, several safety enhancements have been ordered. Karts will now have safety netting on their left sides. All drivers will be required to don elbow pads. And, a 6" x 6" aluminum plate must be attached adjacent to the clutch on the right side of the seat. Those changes went into effect for last Sunday afternoon's race, which was won by Dannie Wyatt.

The series also experimented with increasing the angle of the top-mounted wing from 15 to 20 degrees. That idea didn't yield the desired effect, however, and was scrapped.

The Speedway will hold its regular, weekly "test and tune" session this evening. Gates open at 5 p.m. and practice begins at 6. Pit admission is $10. There is no charge to watch from the grandstands.

• • •

Nick Smith (INEX Legends) and Matt Hockaday (UCAR) each bring two-race winning streaks into this weekend's competition. Per track rules, they'll be penciled into the #8 slot on the starting grids for their respective features.

• • •

Last night's "Wild Wacky Wednesdays" program fell victim to foul weather. It was the second straight rainout (and the third of the month) for the popular series. Action resumes on Aug. 6.

The mid-week event features street cars in 1-on-1 drag races (for one lap around the track), "Time Attacks" (solo runs against the clock) and burnout contests.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the fun gets under way at 7. Tickets are just $5 for adults and kids (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Pit passes for competitors are $15.

Keith Rocco, a regular competitor at a trio of Connecticut tracks (Waterford, Stafford and Thompson), has maintained his spot atop the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national top 500 for another week. Veteran driver Marty Ward of Greenville-Pickens Speedway has moved into second place and is hot on Rocco's heels, only five points back.

Local competitors in the national rankings include: C.E. Falk (18th); Greg Edwards (65th); Danny Edwards Jr. (116th); Jeff Shiflett (226th); Nick Smith (290th); Mark Wertz (323rd); Dean Shiflett (339th); Shawn Balluzzo (359th); Matt Waltz (387th); and, Terry Carroll (495th).

Philip Morris of Motor Mile Speedway in Radford continues to hold a commanding advantage in the Virginia state points rundown. Falk and Greg Edwards rank second and fifth, respectively, while Danny Edwards Jr. is 11th.

NASCAR action continues at Langley Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 9, with SunTrust Bank/Whelen Engineering Night. That evening's six-race lineup includes: Crossroads Fuel Service Late Model Stock Cars, Super 8 Motels/B&B Engines Grand Stocks, Med Express Urgent Care Super Trucks, E-Z Auto of Newport News UCARs, Wolf Contractors Wolf Trucks and Standard Welding Pro 6s.

A longtime member of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, Langley Speedway is a .395-mile, slightly-banked oval. The track is located at 11 Dale Lemonds Dr., off North Armistead Ave., in Hampton, Va.
