Stephan Evans captures career first Victory Lap Late Model win at Virginia Motor Speedway
Jul 27, 2008 - updated Jul 27th, 2008 2:57pm
Web posted by Dave Seay

Jamaica, VA. --

Stephan Evans of Tyner, NC captured Saturday night’s 35 lap Victory Lap Late Model feature at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway, taking the lead from Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA on lap 22 in his #92 Quality Logging Cams Racing Engines powered Chevrolet Rocket. The win was Evans career first late model victory.

Current point leader Walker Arthur of Forest, VA led the first six laps before blowing a motor ending his night. Austin Hubbard of Laurel, DE took over the lead and led the next seven laps before his motor expired in turn 4 handing the lead to Cohick.

Cohick would hold the lead until lap 21 when Evans dove inside the veteran out of turn 2 to take the lead and the victory.

Stevie Long, who brought out the races third caution on lap 8, drove back to the front to take home a third place finish.

Trailing Evans to the checkers were Tom Cohick, Stevie Long, Chris Stacy and Ben Bowie. Bowie picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fifth place finish.

In other action Paige Harrison of Jetersville, VA held off a last lap challenge to take home the victory in the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature. In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg, PA held off Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC to get his third win of the season and in the Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Bob Terry of Stafford, VA survived a caution filled race to pick up his first win of 2008.

The Budweiser Modified 25 feature came down to a green, white, checkered finish with Paige Harrison of Jetersville, VA holding off a challenge by Matt Marshall and Bret Hamilton to take home his first win of the season leading flag to flag.

Harrison led the first 19 laps without much of a challenge. Caution on lap 18 would close Hamilton and the rest of the field on Harrison’s bumper. On the restart Harrison jumped the cushion in turn 2 with Hamilton and Marshall diving to the inside for position. With Hamilton and Marshall racing side by side out of turn 4 for the lead caution fell for the final time handing the lead back to Harrison.

On the next restart Harrison was able to keep control of the lead, going on to take the victory. Following Harrison to the checkers were Matt Marshall, Bret Hamilton, Mark Schools and Brian Maxey. Marshall picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his second place finish.

In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature defending champion Craig Folmar of Phillipsburg, PA returned to form leading flag to flag and holding off current point leader Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC to pick up his third win of the season.

Folmar drove a masterful race lapping up to fifth place and stretching his lead out to a full straight when the races final caution closed the field on his bumper.

On the restart Bolac had one shot to take the lead and that shot came in turn one where he tried a slide job on Folmar that came up short. Folmar went on to record the win followed by Daren Bolac, Mary Anne Williams, Tom Humphries and Tyler Shipp. Brent Bordeaux picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with a seventh place finish.

In the Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Ryan Toole of Richmond, VA led the first 6 laps before surrendering it to Bob Terry of Stafford, VA. Terry swept to Toole’s outside out of turn 2 to take the lead and never looked back as he went on to record his first victory of 2008.

Following Terry to the checkers were Ryan Toole, Wesley Givens, Troy Carter and Mark Wright. Tyler LaRoque picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with a seventh place finish. Brett Atkins of Gloucester, VA set a new track record with a lap of 22.710 seconds, lowering his previous mark. Atkins night would end early when he was involved in a crash on lap 7.

Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway returns back to action Saturday August 2nd to host Capitol Boiler Works “Kid’s in Uniform” Night. All children wearing a baseball, soccer, Boy Scout or Girl Scout uniform will be admitted free.

The night’s events will feature Round 3 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T.

The four race series offers a bonus program for multiple wins by a driver. The Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge will pay a $5,000 bonus to anyone winning two of the four events; it goes to $15,000 if a driver can win three of four events; and finally, if a driver sweeps all four events that driver would pick up a cool $25,000 bonus.

The first two rounds of the series were won by different drivers which means there will be no $25,000 bonus paid out again this year. Current point leader Walker Arthur of Forest, VA picked up the win in round one with Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA holding off Arthur for the round two win. Both drivers are eligible for the $15,000 bonus, but one of them must sweep the final to rounds of the series. Track rules for the Victory Lap Late Model Division will apply.

Also see the Truckin Thunder Sportsman, New Generation Racing Sprint Car and Limited Stock Car divisions in action. Come experience the raw, pure excitement that is dirt racing!

Competitor gates for Saturday, August 2nd will open at 3pm with spectator gates opening at 4pm. On track activities will begin at 6:30pm with hot laps. Divisions scheduled to race on Saturday August 2nd: Victory Lap Late Models (40 Laps); Truckin Thunder Sportsman (25 Laps); New Generation Racing Sprint Cars (25 Laps); and the Limited Stock Cars (20 Laps).
