South Boston Speedway News
Bailey, Denning will sport different looks for Late Model racing action at South Boston Speedway Saturday

South Boston, VA. --

A couple of familiar faces with be driving rides with different looks Saturday night when the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division drivers hit the asphalt for racing action at South Boston Speedway.

After a one-week break from racing action, South Boston Speedway will turn the lights on again on Saturday, July 26 for the running of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Southside Virginia Community College 150. The first race of the night will get the green flag at 7 p.m.

The featured attraction of the night will be a 150-lap race for the Barkhouser Late Model Stock Car Division.

Jonathan Bailey, who normally drives the number 89 Bailey’s-sponsored machine, will pilot the number 1 Late Model Stock Car owned by Stacy Compton. Jon Denning, who formerly drove a Late Model machine as part of Sellers Racing, will be behind the wheel of the Steve James-owned ride this weekend, which will still bear the number 46.

Bailey said the deal with Compton is a “one race deal.”

“I’m excited about it,” Bailey said. “I think we will be pretty good. I tested the car [Wednesday] and we tested real well. I think we should be pretty good Saturday.”

Bailey did say that the deal to drive Compton’s car, the one formerly driven by Adam Barker, was for one week.

“I don’t think it is much of a secret anymore that I will be driving for FDJ Motorsports for the rest of the season after this week,” Bailey said. He went on to say that he was excited about driving with the added help of Frank Deiny Jr. the remainder of the season.

Denning, who is always a threat to score a victory at the four-tenths mile asphalt oval when he is behind the wheel, said last weekend that the opportunity to team with Steve James had been great.

“This is really good for me,” Denning said. “We are hoping for some big things the rest of the year. I think we could have a lot of success.”

Wayne Ramsey and Justin Johnson, who each scored wins in the twin Barkhouser Late Model events on July 12, sit atop the championship point standings in the Late Model Stock Car ranks. Ramsey enters racing action this weekend with a slim 13-point edge over Johnson.

Also scheduled for racing action Saturday will be the competitors in the Limited Sportsman Division. Lee Pulliam, a four-time winner this season, leads Bruce Anderson, who scored his third triumph of the season on July 12, by a slim margin in that division’s title chase.

Also scheduled for action Saturday will be the Budweiser Pure Stock Division, which will compete in twin races, the Yellow Book USA Southern Vintage Modifieds and the INEX Legends Series.

The rain date for the Southside Virginia Community College 150 will be Sunday, July 27.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 1 p.m. with practice for all divisions beginning at 2:15 p.m. and continuing through 3:45 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. and qualifying time trials will get cranked up at 5:15 p.m.

Tickets are priced at $10 for adults. Youth, ages 7-12, will be admitted for $5 and children, ages 6 and under, will be admitted free. All youth must be accompanied by a paying adult to receive discounted admission.
