Woody Pitkat Starting Another Hot Streak with Double Weekend Wins

For the Second-Straight Season, Pitkat Going On a Tear at Stafford and Thompson

There are several things race fans can count on during the hot summer months of July and August around Connecticut, particularly fans at Stafford Motor Speedway and Thompson International Speedway.

At either of those tracks during the summertime, plenty of cold beverages and ice cream will be sold on the muggy evenings under the lights and the action will be just as hot as the thermometer indicates.

If the first few weeks of July of this year and the mid-summer weeks of 2007 are any indication, it’s also a safe bet that those fans at Stafford and Thompson will often see 29-year-old Woody Pitkat in victory lane.

Pitkat doubled up on victories on July 17th and 18th, in the Sunoco Modified feature at Thompson on Thursday and the SK Modified feature on Friday at Stafford. The Stafford victory was Pitkat’s second of the season at the driver’s hometown track and comes nearly a year after Pitkat started his summer stretch that found him in victory lane a total of seven times throughout the summer of 2007 at Stafford and Thompson.

“I hope this is the start of another streak like that,” said Pitkat. “But I know that about 70 to 80-percent of this racing thing is about luck. Right now hopefully we can get on the path of being consistent every week. Even if it is not a win, even if it is fifth or fourth for two weeks, that is what we want - consistent top fives. We want to get some points back at both tracks and then we will see what happens towards the end of the year.

“We are just trying to get on a roll. This week has been, by far, a great week.”

While the celebration went deep into the Stafford night as Pitkat’s SK Modified win capped off the outstanding weekend, the driver could not forget to remember his lost car owner and friend, David Rowe, who passed away earlier this season.

“This one (win) is definitely for David Rowe. I even have the new fire suit (emblazoned with The Davidson Company on it, the business Rowe owned). I really wish that he could have seen this one.”

Pitkat is a former Sunoco Modified Champion at Thompson International Speedway. He’s won scores of races at both tracks and NASCAR State and Regional Championships. But there’s one spot on his mantle that he still hopes to fill this season – an SK Modified title at Stafford Motor Speedway.

Growing up just a few minutes down the road from the historic half-mile, Pitkat dreamed of one day winning a Stafford Modified title. Despite some tough breaks at the start of the season, Pitkat and a strong team of volunteers know that wins like Friday night’s will go a long way in making those title dreams a reality.

“When you have Jimmy Fuller as a crew chief, it is never say die. There are guys on the crew like Bobby Hitchcock. The car is at his shop. He does not come home from work some nights until 11:00 PM. I pass him on the road when he is going to work on the cars and I am leaving (the shop). It is just unbelievable the people that help. A lot of them have been there for a long time from way back when I ran my DARE Stock car (at Stafford).”

Pitkat’s double-feature victories nearly became a three-peat, as he finished a narrow second in the Late Model feature at Stafford on Friday night in a borrowed car from Dennis Godbout. Although Pitkat was disqualified from the Late Model feature due to a compression issue in post-race technical inspection, he is not letting that bit of bad luck keep him down going into the 150-lap SK Modified feature at Stafford this Friday night.

“We will just come here and I will take my time, be consistent and try to stay in the top five or top 10 for the end of the race. I think that that is going to be the strategy. I do not like the deal that we cannot pit, but everybody is going to be in the same predicament. It is going to be whoever takes care of their tires the best and still have something at the end and maybe it will be me.”

Pitkat will continue his championship bid at Stafford in a 150-lap battle on Friday, July 26th. Prior to that, Pitkat will be back at Thompson on Thursday night looking to double up on Sunoco Modified wins there.
