Cohick ends Arthur’s $25,000 dream with victory in RD 2 of Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge

Jamaica, VA. --

When the night started one driver had a chance to continue his quest towards a $25,000 payday at Bill Sawyer’s Virginia Motor Speedway in the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T. When the checkered flag flew that quest fell one spot short as Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA led flag to flag in taking round two of the Challenge series over Walker Arthur of Forest, VA.

Mark Parks and Tom Cohick led the field to green with Cohick rocketing to the lead out of turn 2 with Walker Arthur following to second. A couple of cautions would close up the field in the early laps with Cohick getting great restarts each time.

By lap 15 the duo began working lapped traffic with Cohick able to negotiate the slower traffic with easy pulling away to a ten car length advantage. By the halfway point Arthur was able to pull within seven car lengths and Cohick and was closing fast. Behind the top two the battle for third heated up with Stevie Long working to hold off the advances of Scott Adams and Austin Hubbard.

With ten to go Arthur had closed to two car lengths of Cohick working every inch of the track to find a way around the leader. The distance would close up quickly as caution came out on lap 30 for Mark Parks, who had come to rest in turn 4 with a flat tire.

On the restart Adams looked inside Long as they headed into turn 1 with Hubbard and Stephen Evans joining in for third. As the quartet of drivers raced off of turn 4 it got three wide with Long coming out on the short stick with a flat tire sending him to pit road.

That gave Arthur one more shot at Cohick on a restart and on the drop of the green, this time Arthur was able to stay with Cohick. Arthur worked high and low trying to find a way around Cohick whose car was working flawlessly. As the two headed into turn 1 on the white flag Arthur took it to the high side closing on the rear of Cohick as they headed into turn 3. Cohick was able to hold off the last lap challenge and pick up the round two victory.

“We have really struggled this year, I made a few calls this week and they paid off as the car was just awesome. The competition gets tougher every year and the track has a lot of bite in it making for some awesome racing for the fans,” commented Cohick in victory lane.

With the victory Cohick now joins Walker Arthur with a chance at a $15,000 bonus. If one of the two drivers can sweep the next two rounds of the series they will pick up the hefty payday. The next two rounds are scheduled for August 2nd and 30th.

Rounding out the top five were Scott Adams, Austin Hubbard and Stephen Evans. Ben Bowie picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his sixth place finish.

In other action on Truckin Thunder / Revere Gas Night Roger Jamerson of Mechanicsville, VA picked up the win in the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap feature. In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Mary Anne Williams of Chester, VA took home the victory and in the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature rookie Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA held off Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA in a thrilling finish taking the win in a photo finish. Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC also set a new track record in the New Generation Racing Sprint Car division with a lap of 16.998 seconds.

The Truckin Thunder Sportsman division, racing in front of their division sponsor, put on an exciting race for the fans in attendance. Gene Snow of Richmond, VA and Tony Wood of New Kent, VA led the 20 car field to green with Wood darting out to the lead.

Behind Wood it looked like rush hour on the local highway as Snow, J.R. Guy, Stephen Childress, Okey Synan, Jr., Doug Johnson, Tim Shelton and Roger Jamerson were all jockeying for second. As the pack headed to turn 2 for the second time Synan spun with a flat right rear.

On the restart Jamerson dove under Johnson for in turn 2 for fifth. Wood led the field back to green but would relinquish the lead to Snow as he came to a stop with a flat right rear. Snow then led the field to back to green followed closely by Guy.

On the next circuit Guy drove under Snow out of turn 3 to take over the top spot. The race third caution came out on lap 6 when Snow and Childress got together on the front stretch ending Childress’s night. On the restart Shelton tried to get inside Jamerson in turn 1 to no avail.

On lap 9 Jamerson began pressuring Guy for the lead with Shelton and Kenny Moreland in close proximity. On lap 13 Shelton got inside Jamerson with the two racing side by side out of turn 4 making contact as they came to the line bringing out the caution and sending Shelton to pit road with a flat rear tire.

On the restart Jamerson muscled his way inside Guy to take the lead out of turn 2 followed by Moreland and Taylor Doggett, sending guy back to fourth. With the laps winding down Jamerson and Moreland pulled away from the rest of the field with Jamerson cruising to take the win. Rounding out the top five were Kenny Moreland, J.R. Guy, Tim Shelton and Jimmy Duncan. Duncan picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fifth place finish.

In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Michael Tolley of Ashland, VA and Brent Bordeaux of Fredericksburg, VA led the field to green. The two raced back to the line with Tolley leading the first circuit, his first lap led in competition.

Behind the leaders Craig Folmar and Daren Bolac engaged in a fierce battle for fifth with Bolac holding on to the spot. On lap 4 the races first caution fell with Matt Stambaugh looped it in turn 2 collecting teammate Folmar in the process.

On the restart Mary Anne Williams worked past Bordeaux for second as Bolac followed to third. On lap 7 the caution would come out again with Bordeaux and Troy Severin in a tangled mess on the front stretch. On the restart Tolley and Williams pulled away from the battle for third as Bolac worked to hold off Charlie Fasano.

On lap 16 division points leader Bolac brought out a caution with a flat tire. On the restart Williams would rocket to the inside of Tolley to take the lead. With four to go the races final caution would fly closing the field on William’s bumper. That was as close as anyone would get as on the races final restart Williams pulled away ands went on to the win with Stambaugh getting past Tolley and Fasano for second. Rounding out the top five were Michael Tolley, Charlie Fasano and Tom Humphries. James Hawk picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his eighth place finish.

In the night’s finale the Budweiser Modifieds put on an electric show for the fans that came down to inches for the win. Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA and Page Harrison of Jetersville, VA led the 27 car field to green. As they headed to turn 2 Matt Marshall threaded the needle, sneaking through to take the lead.

Marshall worked his way to a comfortable lead as Bret Hamilton worked his way from his tenth place starting position to a spot in the top five by lap 6. With Marshall out front Hamilton began picking them off one by one working his way into a battle for second with Harrison on lap 10. Harrison was able to hold off to second over the next five laps but Hamilton was not to be denied as he finally got by for second on lap 16 with Marshall pulling away.

Several cautions would close Hamilton up on the bumper of Marshall but on each subsequent restart Marshall was able to hold Hamilton at bay. The races final caution came on lap 23 setting up a green, white, checkered finish. On the restart Hamilton went to the top side pulling even with Marshall with one lap to go. The two raced inches apart through the first three turns, touching as they raced out of turn for to the line. With the fans on their feet and cheering the two came to the line in what was a photo finish with Marshall taking the win by .003 seconds.

Rounding out the top five were Page Harrison, Mark Schools and Brian Maxey. With the victory Matt Marshall also picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award.
